Salary From: $101,331.63
Job Summary :
Provide critical incident stress/crisis counselling support to family members, employers and workers, immediately following a serious injury or workplace fatality, assessing individuals and initiating referrals as appropriate. Facilitate work transition services and bereavement counselling to surviving spouses, making sound business decisions relating to the extent of support to be provided. Travel throughout Ontario when providing services may be required.
Provide education and advice to internal and external parties on WSIB legislation, crisis intervention and grief-related issues.
Major Duties & Responsibilities
- Assess and coordinate immediate needs of family members by:
- Contacting next of kin within 24 hours (if appropriate) of learning of traumatic fatality or serious injury and conducting psycho-social assessment of spouses, parents, children, other family members and significant others, as required;
- Assisting with such issues as funeral arrangements, forms completion (internal WSIB forms, CPP forms and those of independent insurance companies), home care arrangements and school contacts where children are involved, at locations throughout Ontario with sole responsibility for making referrals to psychologists, psychiatrists, trauma therapists, grief therapists, support groups, and other community resources, as appropriate;
- Participating in Discharge conferences to facilitate smooth transition home, and ongoing support;
- Maintaining connection and providing short term counseling to family members until a satisfactory relationship is established within the community;
- Facilitating longer term grief counseling in some cases, to spouses and significant others which can necessitate caseload management of such cases for a period of several years.
- Act as liaison for families in crisis, explaining the roles and processes of the various parties involved in a serious injury or workplace fatality; i.e. formal agendas and mandates of the WSIB, including explaining WSIB funeral policy, lump sum awards, periodic benefits, work transition services and bereavement counseling; the role of various government agencies and community resources province-wide, as well as that of the medical community including the Coroner’s office and purpose of the Coroner’s inquest and how to access a coroner’s report. Explaining services and benefits in the serious injury program such as, specialized treatment, equipment, and services to maximize their recovery and quality of life.
- Assess and coordinate needs of the accident employer by:
- Contacting the accident employer within 24 hours of learning of a traumatic fatality or serious injury and arranging a visit as soon as necessary, when required;
- Facilitating group defusing and/or debriefing sessions at the accident employer site, relating to critical incident stress management and educational sessions on post-traumatic stress disorder and stress management techniques;
- Conducting one-on-one crisis intervention counseling sessions with witnesses and specific coworkers, providing intense support within the first eight weeks of trauma to co-workers to reduce potential of post-traumatic stress disorder and additional claims to WSIB;
- Consulting with employers, as appropriate, to ensure that a plan is in place for handling a critical incident in the workplace;
- Facilitating the establishment of claims for witnesses, as necessary, with Traumatic Mental Stress.
- Work closely with Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development (MLITSD)to provide timely and comprehensive assistance following a serious injury or traumatic workplace fatality.
- Responding to request from the MLITSD to provide crisis intervention counselling to witnesses;
- Initializing contact with MLITSD representatives to facilitate contact with the family and to provide relevant information about the family dynamics;
- Immediately responding when MLITSD notifies us about a new serious injury or traumatic fatality; this includes gathering information to register a new claim, responding to the needs of an employer and a family prior to the claim being registered and Form 7 being submitted.
- Prepare reports documenting all actions taken and recommendations made and inform adjudication staff on issues critical to the adjudication of the claim. Validate the authenticity of documents submitted to the Board, directly related to entitlement decisions, enabling the WSIB to provide a higher level of service in the way of faster, accurate and equitable claims decisions.
- Coordinate work transition services to spouses of deceased workers in OD. This includes sole responsibility for:
- Determining eligibility of spousal work transition services and assessing spouses’ readiness to engage in and benefit from work transition services;· Referral of spousal claims to Work Transition management and timely follow up of work transition services caseload for surviving spouses as necessary;
- Activation or reactivation of the support services of grief counseling or work transition services when the request is made by spouse/family or legal representative especially when request is made outside of the one year time frame indicated by the WSIA;
- Ensuring that expenses submitted by the spouse are being processed in a timely manner.
- Refer, review and evaluate the effectiveness of the services provided by external providers. Perform administrative tasks to ensure payment is issued to external providers and entitlement to external services is properly recorded.
- Develop and maintain effective relationships with professionals in Ontario, involved in trauma counseling and crisis intervention.
- Represent the WSIB in speaking engagements at Provincial and National conferences on issues of grief and crisis intervention in the workplace.
- Act in a consultative capacity by providing advice and practical assistance to OD&SBP, SIP and other staff on death and grief related issues.
- Collaborate and participate as requested in project work related to serious injuries and workplace fatalities and WSIB entitlement and services, provided under the Serious Injury program and the survivor benefits program (includes requests from Office of the Chair)
- Provide guidance and support to other Operations staff (i.e. OD&SBP and SIP staff, management) through formal and informal training on how to handle serious injuries and fatality claims and communicate with families/ survivors.
- Perform other duties as assigned or required.
Job Requirements
Education
- University completion at undergraduate level with a specialty focus in Psychology, Sociology, Nursing, Social Work, Thanatology or a related discipline with advanced Certificate in Critical Incident Stress Debriefing or a Certificate in Trauma Management, and a certificate or diploma in Grief/Bereavement Counselling.
- Valid Ontario G class driver’s license.
Experience
- Two years prior experience in trauma management.
