Full-Time Senior Associate Scientist/Scientist, Upstream Process Development
Job Description
Role Description
The Upstream Process Development – Biopharmaceuticals team in Zoetis Veterinary Medicine Research and Development is seeking a motivated bioprocess scientist or engineer to propel an exciting portfolio of novel protein therapeutics and monoclonal antibodies designed for veterinary medicine applications. As a member of this team, the successful candidate would work hands-on at the bench to develop mammalian cell culture production processes in bioreactors to improve productivity, product quality, robustness, and economics. Upon being trained, the successful candidate would work with a large degree of autonomy to design and execute experiments and be responsible for maintaining project timelines. To successfully develop processes, the candidate would apply knowledge of the biological sciences, relevant bioprocess technologies, and process scaling, while collaborating directly with scientists across Research, Development, Pilot plants, and Manufacturing. Furthermore, the successful candidate must also demonstrate growth in problem-solving, decision making, innovation, and capacity to learn a broad spectrum of skills to discover effective solutions for the numerous scientific challenges encountered during process development. Thus, candidates with proficiency in biopharmaceutical process development and related fields will be highly regarded. This position will be based in Kalamazoo, MI with interactions with colleagues and external partners located around the globe.
Position Responsibilities:
- Represent upstream process development in multiple project teams by being accountable to timelines, clearly communicating research findings, and sharing subject matter expertise.
- Collaborate directly with scientists in multiple adjacent development teams and pilot and manufacturing sites globally.
- Apply theoretical knowledge in the scientific disciplines that support mammalian cell culture and biopharmaceutical production.
- Design and conduct cell culture experiments in shake flasks and bioreactors to identify and validate parameters that affect performance, such as cell growth, product yield, and product quality.
- Apply formal design of experiments and statistical models to systematically improve the parameters that affect cell culture and bioreactor performance.
- Understand and apply principles of scale-up and scale-down to bioreactor systems ranging from micro-scale to bench-scale to large-scale.
- Organize, manage, and interpret large data sets.
- Document experimental findings and maintain electronic laboratory notebooks in accord with scientific protocol and applicable Standard Operating Procedures.
- Author reports to be included in technology transfers and dossiers for product registration.
- Drive innovation and continuous improvement by seeking and studying latest bioprocess technologies and techniques, as well as designing and conducting laboratory experiments to evaluate.
- This position requires occasional weekend work on a rotating basis amongst all members of the team.
Preferred technical skills
- Demonstrated aseptic cell culture technique for mammalian cell culture.
- Independent upstream process development experience. Demonstrated success in applying knowledge such as, but not limited to, molecular biology, cellular metabolism, signal transduction pathways, biochemistry, biotechnology, and biochemical engineering to bioprocess development will be highly regarded.
- Theoretical and applied knowledge of the parameters that affect bioreactor design, performance, and scaling. Experience in calculating multiple scaling parameters and computational fluid dynamics will be highly regarded.
- Theoretical and applied knowledge of the latest bioprocess technologies, such as in-situ probes/PAT, metabolite analyzers, off-gas analyzers. Experience in process automation, process intensification, and continuous production will be highly regarded.
- Theoretical and applied knowledge of design of experiment and statistics will be highly regarded, as well as experience in wrangling and interpreting large bioprocess data sets.
- Experience operating within regulatory guidelines, such as cGMP, will be considered. Experience navigating complex regulatory landscapes to ensure compliance of processes will be highly regarded.
- Excellent written and verbal communication.
Education and experience
- Possess a relevant degree in science or engineering, such as Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, Chemical/Biochemical Engineering, or Biomedical Engineering.
- A BS candidate would be expected to have 4+ years of experience and the MS candidate 0-2+ years of experience in a relevant biotechnology industry.
