Full-Time Director of Data Strategy & Analytics

BACKGROUND 

We have recently completed an organization-wide data strategy. The strategy consisted of a deep organizational assessment, identifying our North Star use case, and developing a strategic framework and specific recommendations for advancing data and analytics in our organization. 

 

POSITION
The Position’s primary task is to advance data and analytics in the organization, including increasing access, improving data quality, guiding strategy and technical implementation, and managing organization-wide data governance and data privacy programs. This position will work collaboratively across departments to map processes and foster their adoption; train staff; build reports and tools; and act as an internal technical expert and coach. They will foster a culture of data and provide guidance and training on data privacy policy. This person will be a key driver of the Strategy and Data team’s primary task of facilitating access to technology tools, outlining processes, and guiding organizational technology/data strategy. 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 

 

Implement the organization’s strategy related to data systems. 

  1. Steward a multi-year, organization-wide data strategy, including coordinating with the leadership team to set and communicate clear goals and vision for the organization. 
  1. Act as primary contact and project manager for consultants and external advisors on data strategy, data privacy and data governance. 
  1. Mobilize and inspire staff in data roles to achieve the organization’s shared data vision, including tracking progress and evaluating strategies based on progress against milestones. 
  1. Facilitate a cross-departmental Data Governance Committee charged with getting data to the appropriate business and external consumers, improving quality and consistency of core data elements, while reducing data fragmentation and increasing data access as appropriate.  
  1. Gather input across departments, map processes, and problem-solve adaptive and technical challenges on an ongoing basis. 
  1. Continuing to develop prioritization of data efforts for the organization, including identifying and prioritizing key data elements 
  1. Foster business ownership within other departments related to technology tools. 
  1. Drive strategy into new phases, including researching enterprise data platform options while communicating expected outcomes from investment in data infrastructure and tools 

 

Support teams to use data for decision-making and action 

  1. Help teams to design and build standard reports and visualizations. Provide hands-on support to analyze those reports to pull out insights, and to use those insights to guide short-term decision making and longer-term strategy. 
  1. Work across all departments to identify and anticipate data needs, build solutions, and guide people to use those solutions to act. 
  1. Work with the management team to maintain and promote the use of organizational dashboards to make progress against strategy and key metrics visible and actionable. 
  1. Translate business requirements into technical designs to inform structure and content of database reports. 
  1. Simplify complex data into understandable stories, run charts, and insights. Create dashboards, data visualizations and other tools as needed in support of all teams’ primary tasks. 

 

Foster a culture of data across the organization 

  1. Act as an internal coach on data systems in support of all departments’ primary tasks. 
  1. Find and create opportunities to build data literacy at all levels of the organization. 
  1. Develop user facing documentation and Learning Management Systems courses. 
  1. Keep current on technology updates and best practices, acting as an internal source of expertise. 
  1. Help departments understand data requirements from across the organization, and to implement data practices to ensure data is collected in a manner consistent with the broader needs of the organization. 

Build and lead an organizational data privacy program, including tracking and sometimes delivering training, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and regulations, and drafting policy recommendations related to data privacy. 

Other duties as assigned.

BENEFITS 

The position is a full-time, exempt position with full benefits. $80,000 – 100,000. Salary commensurate with experience.

BASIC REQUIREMENTS 

  • Bachelor’s Degree in information systems, data analytics, statistics, or a relevant field OR equivalent experience 
  • 3 – 4 years’ experience working with and configuring relational databases. 
  • Demonstrated success in leading data platform project(s) including data lake/data warehouse project(s). 
  • Experience using declarative technology tools, such as workflow builder in Asana or Salesforce, to automate business processes. 
  • Ability and interest in researching and communicating technology options, and guiding the selection and implementation of new data technologies. 
  • Experience working with revenue and operational datasets. Experience working in a nonprofit organization is a plus. 
  • Expert in building reports and visualizations using on-platform reporting in Salesforce and/or business intelligence tools such as Tableau, Power BI, or Business Objects. 
  • Experience working with sensitive data and compliance standards (examples would be HIPAA-protected data, student data, etc.) 

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The team member is regularly required to communicate clearly and exchange accurate information interpersonally or through communication devices. Must be able to learn new systems and procedures, prepare and analyze data and figures, constantly operate a computer and other standard office machinery.  Must be able to remain in a stationary position 65% of the time. The position requires occasional movement on- and offsite to attend meetings and presentations. Must be able to move light items such as paper, laptops and presentation materials up to 15lbs.
