The Challenge
We are looking for 3 senior Roadside Assistance/Incident Management Assistance Patrol (IMAP) Responders to join our team.
 
In this role, you will:
    • Operate an IMAP vehicle.
    • Manage traffic control deployments.
    • Conduct route surveillances.
    • Perform incident response including removal of disabled and abandoned vehicles, incident/congestion management.
    • Perform routine motorist assistance duties and debris removal to facilitate traffic flow and minimize congestion.
    • Communicate via two-way radio with dispatch and other first responder agencies for appropriate coordination.
    • Be a lead worker and provide on-the-job training to incoming Incident Management Responders.
    • Work independently, think critically, prioritize and control situations, and make decisions quickly under extreme pressure and in a hazardous environment.
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of roadway maintenance operations and NCDOT workplace safety policy and practices.
    • Knowledge of Incident Command and basic work zone safety.
    • Demonstrated ability communicating with the public, first responders, media, and staff in order to maintain a positive working relationship.
    • Supervising staff experience including scheduling, tracking, training, motivating, and counseling subordinates.
    • Knowledge of policies and laws regarding incident management, including NCDOT’s CMS policy & Quick Clearance Law.
    • Capable of performing routine tasks.
    • Strength to move/lift heavy objects of at least 50 pounds.
    • Able to work in all weather conditions, including rain, snow, heat, and ice.
    • Computer skills using applications required to perform the job, including Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), SAP (timesheets), Outlook (email), Excel (spreadsheets), Word, and other laptop applications (incident reports, logs).
    • You can work outside normal shift hours in the event of larger after-hours incidents or incidents that extend beyond normal working hours.
    • Ability to safely and skillfully maneuver IMAP vehicle in all weather and traffic conditions while communicating with other units and response partners.
    • Strong communication skills.
    • You have patience and an aptitude for training incoming Incident Management Responders.
    • Demonstrated defensive driving skills and safe driving habits.
    • Agility to respond and move quickly around fast-moving vehicles unassisted.
    • Stamina to walk long distances multiples times throughout the day.
    • you can change a tire unassisted.
    • Working knowledge of fire safety (including the ability to operate a fire extinguisher) and small hand/power tools.
    • Experience making minor mechanical repairs.
    • Ability to operate an IMAP utility truck with winch, traffic control devices, and other small tools and equipment.
    • Knowledge of two-way radio systems and phone communications.
    • An understanding of dynamics of traffic control implementation based on roadway features, highway geometry, and weather conditions.
 
Education & Experience
    • High school/GED diploma, and
    • 6+ years of relevant experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
 
Notes
    • You will need to successfully pass our classroom training related to safety, IMAP, and traffic management operations, and a field assessment review.
    • You will need to maintain a neat, well-groomed appearance while on duty. Attention to personal hygiene is a requisite when in uniform. These procedures, regulations, and policies are intended to promote a professional image and to encourage good health for consistently optimum job performance while increasing public confidence.
