UKCEH is looking for a Greenhouse Gas and Soil Carbon Scientist to join our 600-strong team, contributing to scientific discovery and generating the data, insights and solutions that researchers, businesses and governments need to solve complex environmental challenges.
Working at UKCEH is rewarding. Our science makes a real difference, enabling people and the environment to prosper, and enriching society. We are the custodians of a wealth of environmental data, collected by UKCEH and its predecessors over the course of more than 60 years.
As a valued member of our team, you’ll get:
- 27 days annual leave, rising to 29 days after five years
- 10% employer pension contribution
- Enhanced maternity and paternity leave
- 24 hour, 365-day access to support with physical, mental, social, health or financial issues plus access to our trained Welfare Officers
- Flexible working opportunities
And much more…
We are recruiting a permanent post within the Plant-Soil Interactions Group. This technical role will contribute to a range of net zero focussed projects, regarding the mitigation and removal of agricultural greenhouse gases (GHG’s) from UK and international land use.
The work ranges from field surveys to more mechanistic experiments in the field and laboratory. You’ll be joining a team of 15 scientists and 3 PhD researchers, part of the wider Soils and Land Use science area.
As a Research Associate, you will benefit from our training programme over your first three years, running in parallel with the delivery of work.
You will gain or improve skills in some of the following:
- Operation of automated chamber systems for measuring GHG fluxes, from land use and climate change experiments
- Analysis of large, high-frequency datasets from GHG chambers, eddy covariance and sensors
- Soil carbon sampling and analysis
- Training in laboratory approaches for understanding biogeochemical cycles, including microbial carbon and nitrogen dynamics
- Remote First Aid and 4×4 training
You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and giving you the support you need to thrive at UKCEH.
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Contributing to field and laboratory biogeochemistry for a range of experiments, to address questions about climate, land use change and terrestrial biogeochemical cycles
- Operation of GHG/Carbon flux measurements (e.g., GHG chambers, eddy covariance) and assessments of microbial community dynamics (e.g., enzyme assays, stable isotopic tracers)
For the role of Greenhouse Gas and Soil Carbon Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who has:
- A good degree (2.1 or higher) and preferably a master’s degree in a relevant discipline e.g., biology, ecology, chemistry, environmental science, or equivalent experience
- Knowledge of terrestrial carbon cycling and GHG fluxes
- A full UK (manual) driving licence
- Willing to travel for work, including overnights
- Capacity to carry out fieldwork in remote areas and/or overseas (up to 3 weeks each time)
- Experience of working with field or laboratory instrumentation
- Experience with statistics and handling data
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills for planning and presenting ideas
- Good time management skills and the ability to juggle competing demands
Desirable skills
- Laboratory or field instrumentation maintenance
- Experience of soil microbial ecology
- Ability to work with large datasets including statistical analyses
- Knowledge and understanding of agricultural GHG mitigation strategies (e.g., fertilisers, crop management, biochar, bioenergy)
If we’ve just described you, we’d love to meet. Please upload a cover letter with your CV. Apply now.
