Full-Time Strategic Partner, Indigenous Engagement and Partnerships

CADTH – Posted by careers@cadth.ca Anywhere

Job Description

  • Status: Full time, indefinite
  • Location: Ottawa or Toronto, Ontario or within Canada (hybrid)
  • Closing date: Open until filled
  • Salary range: $110,000 to $137,000 per year

Background

CADTH’s 3-year strategic plan deliberately and explicitly calls out the organization’s commitment to reconciliation and engagement with Indigenous Peoples. Since the plan was released, we have engaged in a learning journey with the Board of Directors and with staff, released a Board-approved reconciliation statement, and begun to establish processes to ensure we understand the priorities and experiences of Indigenous Peoples. While we are proud of our progress, as a Settler Organization we realize much more needs to be done to create space to listen to Indigenous voices and reflect them in our work.

To help advance these commitments, CADTH will continue to build on the efforts of a highly engaged Indigenous allyship working group. We have also retained the services of an Indigenous owned and operated consulting firm and created this dedicated senior manager level role reporting directly to the Vice President, Strategic Partnerships and Initiatives. The individual in this role will be asked to support internal discussions about projects and processes to engage humbly with First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples, governments, organizations, and communities; to support discussion and learning opportunities internally, including at the Board of Directors level, and for committees and staff; and to advance our reconciliation efforts together with the People and Culture team, the Indigenous allyship working group, and the organization as a whole.

Importantly, while we have thought carefully about the accountabilities of this role, we realize the individual in this role may help us identify other, more important priorities and activities by creating space and then listening to Indigenous Peoples. This is what we hope will ultimately shape our journey of reconciliation and path forward.

Position highlights:

  • provide leadership and guidance rooted in lived experience to support a culture of truth, openness, and safety, while advising CADTH’s statement of reconciliation with Indigenous Peoples, communities, governments, and organizations, and to develop and support implementation of an organization-wide action plan that is aligned with the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the Calls to Justice of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls, the Report of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, and the In Plain Sight Report
  • guide the enhancement and growth of the organization’s first Indigenous Engagement Strategy by suggesting and supporting the establishment of relationships with Indigenous Elders, Knowledge holders, leaders, and groups to facilitate an ongoing exchange of information and learning in support of reconciliation
  • grow CADTH’s understanding and ability to ensure reciprocity in every relationship and engagement effort by beginning to address Indigenous challenges in the health care system with a goal of supporting enhanced capacity
  • due to the, at times, potentially difficult nature of being in this role, the incumbent will be invited to participate in a team of committed individuals, some of whom are Indigenous and some of whom are Settlers, from other organizations advancing their own reconciliation and engagement efforts
  • provide thoughtful and strategic leadership in the development, review, and implementation of internal policies, procedures, and processes to eliminate the potential to perpetuate anti-Indigenous racism, systemic racism, and colonization
  • provide advice and guidance to the Executive team about ways to enhance a culture of safety, address anti-Indigenous and systemic racism, and support greater awareness and incorporation of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing across the organization; this may include advice regarding recruitment and retention, employee training and awareness needs, and inclusion of Indigenous perspectives and ways of knowing into CADTH’s work
  • collaborate and work closely with the Strategic Partner, Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility (IDEA) to incorporate an intersectional lens.

Knowledge, skills, and experience:

  • a person of Indigenous ancestry with a strong Indigenous cultural safety and anti-racism lens; pursuant to Section 24 of the Ontario Human Rights Act, preference will be given to applicants of Indigenous Ancestry
  • recent and related experience negotiating and facilitating discussions, leading to consensus with diverse groups such as Indigenous communities and organizations, senior managers, and decision influencers to build and grow engagement
  • the ability to navigate and translate both Indigenous and non-Indigenous worldviews, especially as these pertain to health and health care
  • a deep understanding of Canadian colonial impacts on Indigenous people in social and health contexts
  • an awareness of the various First Nations, Inuit, and Métis governance systems and processes
  • knowledge and understanding of the Royal Commission on Aboriginal Peoples, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s Calls to Action, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, the Calls to Justice of Murdered and Missing Indigenous Women and Girls Report, and other key reports that should or could inform CADTH’s work
  • work well with diverse groups and individuals to develop and maintain internal and external relationships while providing solution-based guidance
  • possess the talent to garner trust and build effective relationships while being open and approachable
  • a critical and conceptual thinker with experience researching and reviewing issues and trends and able to make recommendations for continuous improvement
  • have a proven track record of extracting and aggregating meaningful information to make thoughtful recommendations that management and partners require to make impactful decisions
  • lived and/or work experience will be given similar weighting to postsecondary education in policy, health policy, Indigenous studies, or related areas.

At CADTH, you will find:

  • a team-focused, supportive, and inclusive work environment
  • a comprehensive Total Rewards package that includes health, dental, and wellness benefits; a defined benefit pension plan with the Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan (HOOPP); and a variety of leave options
  • opportunities to work with and learn from highly specialized professionals
  • personal growth through professional development opportunities, corporate training, and support for continuing education
  • a friendly culture that supports community engagement
  • the opportunity to make a difference for people in Canada and effect positive change.
