NYU Tisch School of the Arts – Posted by nyu_tisch New York, New York, United States

Job Description

New York University/Tisch School of the Arts is accepting applications for the position of Assistant Arts Professor in Set Design to begin Fall 2024. The Department of Design for Stage & Film is expanding its tradition of excellence and seeks help in envisioning the future of design for performance. We are looking for a dynamic and ambitious individual who believes deeply in the importance of design training, and can collaborate with faculty on devising a coherent and equitable artistic vision for the future.

Qualified people in all stages of their career are encouraged to apply.  Ideal candidates will have both commercial and experimental work as a set designer, have strong skills and the ability to teach drafting and model making techniques as well as lead conversations in conceptual design thinking.  Applicants will have roots in art making and storytelling and the ability to be both tactile in the shops as well as use advanced digital technologies.  This position will require a big picture thinker who can be grounded in real world solutions.

With the completion of the Paulson Center, home of two new theaters in the West Village used by both the Grad Acting and Design Programs, we seek an individual interested in committing to teaching and creating new works in new spaces. How do we solve material and labor shortages that are now a part of our industry?  Successful applicant will have production mentorship duties and will help envision the future of how we make environmentally responsible designs and productions.

This hire will expand collaborative opportunities for our students with departments in the Tisch School of the Arts including ITP, Game Design, and others.  How can set design training expand what a set designer does?  What is set design for the stage training’s relationship with production design?  Critical to this position is an interest in networking across the theater industry to aid in hosting future design exhibitions and gatherings for graduating MFA students from other graduate programs.

Candidates with three to five years of teaching experience or equivalent are preferred. Specific responsibilities include:  Two to three classes teaching load per semester of small student centered classes, advise students on career and productions, expand and help host the Design Show, shape curriculum with the Chair, and engage in departmental and university service.  All Tisch faculty are expected and encouraged to maintain professional creative work in NYC and beyond.

We actively seek applicants who identify as members of communities under-represented in the field of design for stage and film.

One of the premiere graduate design training programs in the United States, the Department of Design for Stage and Film is a key pillar of the Tisch School of the Arts. We are a three-year Master of Fine Arts degree program offering concentrations in Set, Costume, Lighting, and Production Design for Film. The department offers an outstanding faculty of working professionals, close proximity to every type of performing and media art imaginable, and endless opportunities to take full advantage of the cultural resources unique to New York City. The department serves a student population of 54, and has 10 full-time faculty, and an adjunct faculty of approximately 25 in the above four disciplines. Over 100 guest artists join us every year in various capacities expanding both the students’ networks and broadening their education experience.
