Full-Time Principal Scientist: MMPA Support Services-Right Whales

Job Description

Ocean Associates, Inc. (OAI) is seeking a candidate to provide support to the NOAA’s National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS), Office of Protected Resources (OPR) in Silver Spring MD. OAI supplies personnel support services on contract to government and industry clients for marine fisheries and protected species. The employees will support the OPR in providing leadership to its North Atlantic right whale vessel strike team. This is a full-time position based on 40 hrs. /week with generous employee benefits. Hourly rate is commensurate with experience. The positions need to be filled as soon as possible.

Duties:

  • Provide leadership to the North Atlantic right whale vessel strike risk reduction team.
  • Lead, manage, coordinate, and provide strategic guidance on programs and projects to meet national priorities. Track and assess program effectiveness and provide recommendations for policies, goals, and objectives.
  • Write concise documents such as briefs, memoranda, and technical correspondence that present scientific and technical information.
  • Oversee analysis and interpretation of biological data, preparation and editing of scientific and technical reports, papers and presentations, investigations of new technologies and critical uncertainties, and preparation of proposals and projects.
  • Coordinate with NOAA staff across Headquarters offices, regional offices, and science centers.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in environmental/biological science with five (5) years of documented evidence of experience in marine mammal conservation and management, or a Master’s degree in environmental/biological science and 3 years of related experience.
  • Knowledge of or background in implementation of Marine Mammal Protection Act (MMPA).
  • Strong technical writing and communication skills.
  • Ability to work effectively both individually and collaboratively in a team/group setting.
  • Ability to receive constructive feedback and implement appropriate action

Location: Work may be performed offsite

Salary and Benefits: This a full-time positions with benefits. Salary: $56.00 to $59.00 per hour.
