Full-Time Principal Systems Engineer (Req#2274)

Job Description

This position is a senior member of the Systems Engineering team that is responsible for system architecture, configuration, builds, and implementations of all system platforms, cloud-based infrastructure, and enterprise storage solutions. The Principal Systems Engineer works closely with the TechOps, Security, and Network Engineering teams, as well as external solution providers and internal business unit resources, to design secure, scalable, extensible technology-based solutions, then build, implement, support those solutions.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Perform system engineering activities across a large number of data center and cloud-hosted servers and applications.  Serves as an escalation for other system engineers and support-related server and application issues.
  • Architect, configure and implement systems and build standards for all platforms through automation via scripting and applications.
  • Work with the various technology teams to assist in the design, build, and implementation of solutions and business line-sponsored initiatives, leveraging leading industry practices.
  • Plan, develop, organize, write and edit operational procedures and runbooks.
  • Help guide the platform and security direction for the organization by monitoring industry trends, facilitating proof-of-concept exercises, and recommending specific technologies to pursue.

PROBLEM SOLVING & DECISION MAKING

  • Ability to independently make decisions to improve system stability, based on data gathered during triage and troubleshooting efforts.
  • Must be able to synthesize multiple data points across several business and technical domains to aid in troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Must be analytical, well organized, and self-directed.
  • Able to make recommendations to manager on decisions of complex, multifaceted nature.
  • Independently drives and coordinates solutions to complex matters.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
  • 6+ years of enterprise technology operational experience

Skills/Knowledge

  • Must have experience implementing and managing various technology projects and platforms.
  • Expert knowledge of, and experience administering and configuring, server operating systems (Windows & Linux).
  • Knowledge of cloud-hosted environments such as Microsoft Azure, Amazon AWS, or Google Cloud Platform.
  • Experience in cloud-based monitoring such as Log Analytics, New Relic, Datadog, along with on-premise monitoring solutions such as (Splunk, SolarWinds)
  • Experience supporting SAML and SSO via Azure and ADFS
  • TCP/IP networking and security concepts are required.
  • Experience in managing and configuring load balancers such as F5, Citrix, etc.
  • Ability to manage enterprise and cloud-based storage solutions (Dell, EMC, Azure File/Blob)
  • Strong Experience with virtualization platforms, such as Nutanix AHV, and VMWare ESX.
  • Familiarity with automation through enterprise distribution and configuration management platforms such as SCCM, Ansible, Jenkins, Ivanti, Puppet, or Chef.
  • Thorough understanding of enterprise architecture and designing diagrams to support that architecture.
  • Experience in one or more scripting languages such as PowerShell, Perl, and Python preferred
  • Experience supporting server technologies (Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, DNS, Microsoft System Center Suite, ServiceNow, Zerto, Veeam, etc.)
  • Experience identifying issues and determining root cause via a consistent, logical approach, create RCA’s, etc.
  • Demonstrated ability to support scalable technology solutions.
  • Ability to manage medium to enterprise sized technology projects.
  • The ability to manage multiple assigned tasks and projects.      Must be able to fully run projects/QR without assistance.
  • Strong written communication skills, including experience documenting standard operating procedures and writing technical documentation (runbooks).
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability and willingness to be on-call and respond to emergencies

      Working Conditions   Must be able to work flexible hours and participate in an on-call rotation.  Some travel between office sites and data centers maybe necessary.
