Position Overview

LitWorld is looking for passionate, creative leaders who are inspired by our mission and committed to supporting young people. The Director of Development and Communications will report directly to the Executive Director. The Director will develop and implement organization-wide fundraising and communications strategies and tactics, including building a team to support. This position will work closely with the Board and executive leadership to build and implement robust fundraising and communications strategies to support programming. This is a role with significant leadership responsibilities that will have a strong impact on the future of LitWorld.

Key Responsibilities

  • Development:
    • Strategy Development & Leadership, Donor Relations: Build upon current fundraising strategies to develop, implement, and monitor a comprehensive and actionable multi-year, multi-tiered development plan, including setting and tracking fundraising goals. Focus on fostering relationships with foundations, individual and corporate donors, local agencies and government funding bodies.
    • Board Development: Serve as a key liaison to the Board’s Fundraising and Marketing Committee, keeping them informed and engaged on a number of fronts including the cultivation of new donors. Liaise with the Committee to provide reports, fundraising advice, marketing collateral, and cultivation support. Ensure Board members align with the overall needs of LitWorld.
    • Oversee all Marketing and Fund Development: Along with Executive Director, actively oversee all fundraising campaigns, tracking, data, and review. Manage gift tracking and actively manage revenue to ensure that annual operating budget objectives and plan goals are met. Support and oversee grant writing and reporting.
    • Frontline Fundraising: Coordinate and support Executive Staff, Board Directors, and staff in fundraising efforts, including cultivation events, site visits, and annual events. Collaborate with Board and ED on corporate giving opportunities. Manage all individual giving, institutional funding, and special events.
  • Communications:
    • Strategic Communications: Develop, implement and monitor annual communications plan, including collecting and tracking data and effectiveness.
    • Content and Material Creation: Maintain universal language and voice across all communications, including working with a team to create communications and marketing materials.
    • Social Media and Online Communications: Maintain LitWorld website, overseeing content development and publishing, ensuring consistent messaging.
  • General:
    • Cross-Department Collaboration: Partner with other departments in order to maximize fundraising and communications efforts and enhance work across the organization. Examples include:
      • Liaise with the program team and other departments to maintain up-to-date knowledge/understanding of program activities, outcomes, and needs.
      • Collaborate with the program team related to fundraising opportunities and communications, such as city council funding applications and corporate partner engagements to raise funds, inventory, and awareness (e.g., cause-marketing).
      • Work collaboratively to develop the infrastructure and compliance systems for fundraising activities (e.g., grants management, restricted funding).
    • Other duties or special projects as assigned by the Executive Director.

Qualifications

Success in this position will require, but not be limited to, the following proven experiences and competencies:

  • What you’ve accomplished (required): 
    • Bachelor’s degree
    • 5+ years of experience in development and/or communications, preferably both
    • Demonstrated experience in:
      • Fundraising leadership, skills, and capabilities
      • Creating and building teams
      • Managing a portfolio of external relationships and building partnerships
      • Utilizing impact data for fundraising
      • Building and executing strategic communications, including writing for marketing
      • Working in nonprofits, understanding the nuances of the sector
      • Serving diverse populations
  • Skills you have developed and knowledge you have acquired: 
    • Bilingual abilities a strong plus
    • Strong philanthropic network in and knowledge of philanthropy in New York City area
    • Experience building relationships with donors and other high level partners/stakeholders
    • Building and overseeing a high-performing team, preferably in development or communications
    • Experience in foundations, government relations, and individual giving
    • Understanding of social media trends

Compensation and Benefits

  • The salary for this position is $95,000, commensurate with experience
  • Remote workplace with plan to work in office 1-2x/week in future
  • Significant autonomy including direct access to donors and fundraising committees
