You’ll be joining our acclaimed Atmospheric Composition Change group within the Atmospheric Chemistry & Effects Science Area at our Edinburgh site, undertaking research to improve our understanding of the chemical climate of our atmosphere through process studies using long-term observations and understanding the impact this has on our environment.

 

We are looking for an enthusiastic Atmospheric Scientist with expertise and a keen interest in the measurement of atmospheric pollutants. You will take a leading role in managing and implementing the installation of new instrumentation, protocols and data processing of air quality observations at the UKCEH atmospheric observatory, Auchencorth Moss. You’ll be involved in the development of the site to be part of the pan European Aerosol, Clouds and Trace Gases Research Infrastructure (ACTRIS) network.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Managing and implementing the development of new in situ air pollution measurements and standard operating protocols (including ACTRIS) at Auchencorth Moss
  • Tracking and managing the deliverables and reporting required for air quality networks, including producing ratified datasets
  • Developing an in-depth knowledge of instrumentation, datalogging and traceable data management systems to enable fault resolution and recommendations for preventative actions and/or enhancements to hardware and software systems used
  • Critical analysis of long-term observations and furthering the science of atmospheric processes
  • Working with and providing support to researchers/students on projects in the area of long-term air quality observations
  • Working year-round in UK outdoor conditions and occasionally travel overseas

 

For the role of an Atmospheric Scientist, we’re looking for somebody who has:

  • A PhD or equivalent qualification/experience in an appropriate subject (e.g., Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Measurement Technology)
  • Experience in operating instrumentation for monitoring atmospheric pollutants
  • An understanding of atmospheric chemical processes
  • Experience of quality assurance and quality control processes for data handling
  • Experience in handling large datasets using programming skills, ideally with R or an equivalent tool
  • A positive, collaborative, and inclusive approach to communication, through both presentations and report writing
  • Has a full UK or EU driving licence to travel for fieldwork
  • Enthusiasm for environmental sciences and a specific interest in the science of long-term observations and chemical composition change

 

These skills are desirable, if you do not have the below skills/experience, we’d still really like to hear from you:

  • Ability to write logging programs for instrumentation
  • Experience with meteorological instrumentation and calibration requirements
  • Knowledge of good practice in quality assurance and Health and Safety in laboratories
