Full-Time Assistant Vice President/Controller

Job Description

Simpson College invites applications for the position of Assistant Vice President (AVP)/Controller.

Reporting to the Vice President for Business and Finance, the AVP/Controller will oversee all finance, accounting, and reporting activities. The Controller will support presentations to the appropriate board committees as the number two to the Vice President for Business and Finance.

The functions listed are essential to the position. However, this is a partial list of all responsibilities.

  • Complete or generate required periodic reports for both internal and external use, including primary responsibilities for the preparation of financial records and related materials for external audit. Prepare periodic financial statements.
  • Maintain general ledger accounts and information to ensure the integrity thereof.
  • Ensure reconciliation of all accounts and preparation of related journal entries.
  • With the assistance of the Assistant Controller, maintain investment accounts and documentation.
  • Assist in developing, implementing, and monitoring accounting policies, procedures, and internal control mechanisms to continuously improve financial control systems.
  • Prepare and monitor the budget in cooperation with the Vice President for Business and Finance.

Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • Minimum of a BA.
  • Knowledge of Generally Accepted Accounting Standards (GAAP) with experience in preparing annual GAAP financial statements.
  • Technology savvy abilities for reporting and managing the College’s finances.
  • Keen analytic, organization and problem-solving skills which allows for strategic data interpretation.
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills; experience in effectively communicating key data, including presentations to senior management, board of trustees or other outside partners.
  • Ability and desire to translate complex financial concepts to individuals at all levels including finance and non-finance managers.

Required Skills/Abilities: 

  • Managerial experience to leverage the current finance team members’ strengths, help clarify roles and responsibilities, and develop and implement training programs to maximize and reach optimal individual and organizational goals.
  • Leadership skills to strengthen internal communications with faculty and staff at all levels throughout the organization; create and promote a positive and supportive work environment.
  • A commitment to cultural diversity and inclusive practices that will contribute to a campus climate that supports equity and diversity.
  • Personal qualities of integrity, credibility, and unwavering commitment to Simpson’s mission and vision.
  • Ability to manage time and deliver projects in an environment of competing priorities.
  • A proactive, hands-on strategic thinker who will own, in partnership with the Vice President for Business and Finance the responsibility for the College’s finances.

Preferred Experience

  • CPA designation.
  • Experience in higher education.
  • Experience working with external auditors.
  • Experience with the Ellucian product Colleague.
  • A track record in grants management as it relates to compliance and reporting of government, corporate and foundation grants.
  • Comprehensive knowledge and understanding of Federal and State financial laws, regulations, and operating guidelines as they pertain to private institutions of higher education.
