Permanent and Full Time (37 hours per week)

We are recruiting a Field Instrument Technician with experience in a range of field and laboratory instruments, to facilitate long-term air quality monitoring and ecosystem pollution effects research.

You will be joining a vibrant field team operating UK and international field facilities, including Auchencorth Moss air quality supersite and Whim Bog Nitrogen Effects experiment.  Our collaborative team consists of air quality researchers, ecologists, technicians and engineers.

You’ll be joining a leading independent, not-for-profit research institute that’s committed to recruiting talented people like you, progressing your career and investing in your skills and training.

 

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Operation, repair, servicing and calibration of field and laboratory equipment
  • Air Quality network local site operator responsibilities
  • Assisting in the development of field facilities for ACTRIS, ICOS, WMO-GAW, eLTER networks
  • Outdoor fieldwork year-round, sometimes lone working, with occasional overnight stays. Some fieldwork overseas is likely
  • Liaising with and supporting researchers and students visiting our long-term field site

 

We’re looking for somebody who:

  • Has a degree, or equivalent experience in an appropriate subject (e.g. Physics, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Engineering)
  • Is able to work outdoors, year-round in the UK and able to travel overseas
  • Has some experience in maintaining scientific instruments
  • Is well organised, effective at time-management and has high attention to detail
  • Is a collaborative and inclusive communicator – written and verbal
  • Has an interest in understanding interactions of ecology with atmospheric pollution
  • Understanding of the importance of accurate protocols and procedures
  • Has a full UK driving licence – please confirm on your CV

 

Desirable Skills

  • MSc in a relevant discipline, or equivalent industrial experience
  • Has experience with gas and aerosol monitoring instrumentation  e.g. O3 & NOx SMPS
  • Experience with meteorological instrumentation and calibration requirements
  • Use of eddy-covariance instrumentation
  • Ability to write logging programs for instrumentation
  • An interest in sensors/instrumentation and electronics
  • Skills in infrastructure maintenance and repair
  • Data analysis and handling skills, including experience in modern computing environments such as R or similar
  • Proven good practice in quality assurance, and Health and Safety in field and laboratories
  • A passion for nature and the environment with experience of working overseas
