BLACK ORGANIZING FELLOW
The Black Organizing program (BOP) is Planned Parenthood’s national effort to work with the Black community on fights for reproductive health, sex education, and access to care. Beginning in 2019, Black Organizing organizers have worked to build sustainable, community-organizing teams in partnership with the Black community. Organizers and volunteer teams have worked on c3-appropriate voter registration, Medicaid expansion (access to Doulas and Doula-Medicaid Certification), access to reproductive healthcare, gender-based violence, Black maternal health, comprehensive sex education, and Stand with Black Women and I Stand with Planned Parenthood campaign efforts.
Planned Parenthood of Illinois and Planned Parenthood Illinois Action’s Black Organizing Fellow will work in close coordination with Planned Parenthood’s statewide and national organizing team, to support the engagement and growth of a base of Black supporters, and help build power for the reproductive health, rights, and justice movement in the Black community. The Black Organizing Fellow will work closely with the Black Organizing Program staff at PPIL/ PPIA to develop campus programming. This includes developing volunteer leaders and advocates, building and attending college campus and community events, and executing effective issue and voter education campaigns.
Essential Functions:
1. Recruit, train, and activate volunteers to support Planned Parenthood and access to reproductive healthcare by engaging in issue advocacy.
2. Organize and execute field tactics such as advocacy campaigns, community events (virtual and in-person), and leadership development training.
3. Maintain all data in the Voter Activation Network (VAN), including new supporter sign ups and events.
4. Build deep/ intentional relationships with Black community partners and with Black youth-based organizations to further reproductive rights and justice initiatives.
5. Additional duties, as assigned.
Physical demands/Work Environment:
While performing the duties of this fellowship, the fellow is regularly required to, talk, hear and use the phone. The fellow is frequently required to use hands and fingers to key in data, handle, or feel and reach.
Supervisor: Program Manager- Chicago
Status: Supplemental (up to 20 hours/week)/Temporary (one year)/Non-exempt from the overtime
provisions of the wage and salary regulations.
Location: Chicago Administrative Office and remote within the state of Illinois.
Fellowship Period: This is a fellowship conditioned on grant funding. The initial fellowship period is
twelve months. The Fellowship period may be potentially extended through additional grant funding.
Qualifications
• Deep appreciation for the mission of Planned Parenthood and knowledge of and commitment to other progressive causes.
• Must be able to travel around the assigned area, as needed
• Working knowledge of VAN, Excel, a computer language, or another tool for data management
• Knowledge of and passion for reproductive health issues
• Curiosity around new ways of organizing, using data, and building infrastructure for a long-term movement
• Strong commitment to meeting deadlines and showing progress towards goals
• Ability to use personal stories to explain why you organize and move others into action
• Available nights & weekends
• Bilingual Spanish/English is a plus
Experience/Education
• 2-3 years’ experience working on a local or campus campaign – as a volunteer or staff
• Substantial experience living or working in Black communities in the US
• Experience managing people (employees or volunteers) quantitative and qualitative goals
• Understanding of grassroots organizing tactics
• Experience leading canvasses or phone banks
• Workshop facilitation experience preferred
