Scope
The Lead Recruiter will bring a passion for creatively recruiting high-performing staff and for building a mission-forward, interconnected organization. This person plans, organizes and implements the job posting, recruitment, assessment and screening mobilization efforts for Sierra Club utilizing Decolonize Design’s Belonging, Dignity, Justice and Joy Framework (BDJJ). The primary function of this role is to recruit, attract and engage qualified job candidates from a variety of in person and on-line advertising, job postings, networking, referrals, campus recruiting, job fairs and other sources. The Lead Recruiter will also partner with Hiring Managers and the greater People Team in drafting job descriptions and lead in job postings, candidate assessment and screenings. This position will also manage Recruiters and collectively, this team will be responsible for end to end recruiting and screening fuctions while actively building robust and diverse candidate pipelines for the organization.
Job activities include but are not limited to:
- Works closely with managers and staff throughout Sierra Club to anticipate and plan for staffing needs. Grounded in Belonging, Dignity, Justice & Joy principles, designs, leads and owns a comprehensive set of people centered practices, tools and templates for recruiting and hiring at Sierra Club; provide guidance, coaching and serve as the primary resource for Hiring Managers’ and People Partners’ on recruiting and hiring. Responsible for leading in person and virtual searches, conducting initial review of candidate resumes, phone screens, assessments and delivering a final pool of 5 – 10 qualified candidates for each unique position to Hiring Managers. Participates and leads in the development and presentation of training programs for managers in talent consideration and selection processes.
- Lead for all job postings and advertisement pathways including but limited to: Sierra Club Careers, job boards, social media, college boards etc. while ensuring all job postings are posted in a timely manner adhering to federal, state and local regulations as well as adhering to Collective Bargaining Agreements. Responsible for leading the candidate communication outreach and close out of the application status ensuring equity is a foundation of recruitment, hiring and in every search at Sierra Club. Structures the hiring process to embed fairness and objective, unbiased decision-making and ensuring all hires at Sierra Club bring the equity analysis and proven skills to live the organization’s values.
- Travel to lead a variety of in person recruitment opportunities including and not limited to: hiring and networking events, campus recruiting, job fairs and other recruitment avenues. Establishes and maintains relationships and a presence with potential candidates, other organizations and agencies. Creates content such as flyers, materials, social media postings to advertise job openings or presence at job fairs.
- Develops effective talent recruitment and hiring strategies and resources. Establishes internal tracking systems for talent pools, passive candidate pipelines, external advertising opportunities, vendor relationships and other forms of talent recruitment activities. Monitors and evaluates the performance of recruiting strategies, ATS and and other resources to ensure the most cost-effective use of vendors and services.
- Working in partnership with People and HRIS teams to establish and manage record keeping systems to store and file job descriptions and talent tracking information; to collect, coordinate and aggregate data for talent, recruitment and hiring and then translating that data into insights by reporting these metrics out to the organization on a quarterly basis.
The successful candidate must have the following skills and experience:
- Recruitment and Hiring Leadership. You have extensive work experience in recruitment and hiring that includes leading a team of recruiters while leading, planning and executing full cycle recruitment. You have the ability to foster and cultivate strong relationships with staff, senior business leaders, hiring managers, candidates and other recruiting partners upholding the principles of Belonging, Dignity, Justice and Joy. You have experience in developing and delivering recruitment and hiring lifecycle content including but not limited to: partnering with hiring managers to build comprehensive outreach and sourcing plans and using the best outreach and sourcing strategies and techniques for each position including writing job announcements and developing interview questions/selection criteria. You bring experience developing and implementing impactful and creative recruitment activities, training and workshops, both in-person and online, in an organizational context that results in measurable practice and culture change.
- Team Management. You bring prior experience in the management of staff, volunteers, consultants, and/or teams. A high capacity to manage one’s own emotions and to identify the emotions of others in order to support yourself and your team; ability to facilitate challenging and courageous conversations. Advanced relational and interpersonal skills include: social-emotional awareness, coaching and skill-building, communication, building relationships across differences, navigating and resolving conflict, giving and receiving feedback.
- Time, Self & Team Management: An eye for efficiency and the focus to constantly be looking for ways to improve, streamline, and simplify processes. You are able to manage workflow efficiently and effectively by prioritizing and multitasking. You exhibit thoroughness and attention to detail to ensure deadlines are met and keep stakeholders informed.
- Technology. You have the ability and curiosity to navigate Applicant Tracking and HRIS systems seamlessly, utilizing them to their fullest potential. You’re at home amongst digital tools, and enjoy demo’ing and evaluating possible new tools to use to make recruiting easier.

The salary range or salary for this position is $120,000 – $130,000. This position is remote and requires the ability to travel.
