Title: Community Restorative Practices Coordinator

Who is Youth Services?

Youth Services has been a highly-respected part of the Windham County, Vermont community since 1972.  In 2021, the Brattleboro Community Justice Center merged with the Restorative Justice Programs at Youth Services. Together, we provide a variety of restorative justice programs serving adults and youth in our community. Youth Services is a supportive, creative, dynamic workplace.   

Position Summary

The Community Restorative Practices Coordinator plays a key role in our organization’s mission to support people to thrive in their communities by: 

  • Collaboratively developing and leading our organization’s new community initiative to strengthen neighborhoods and decrease criminal legal system involvement using restorative practices and other conflict resolution processes.
  • Working directly with those experiencing conflict using restorative practices or other conflict resolution approaches.
  • Piloting a local model for engaging with community conflict, with the potential for growing the position and department, and sharing outcomes with state and community partners.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

Specific duties include:

  • Working directly with individuals experiencing conflict by facilitating community-based circles, other restorative practices, or mediation. This includes intakes, process planning, process facilitation, soliciting and integrating feedback, and follow-up.
  • Leading restorative practices or other conflict resolution trainings for community groups, neighborhoods, organizations, and businesses.
  • Designing new and improving existing restorative practices training curriculum.
  • Building collaborative relationships with community partners, especially groups that are most often unable to access conflict mediation services due to cost or other barriers, e.g. poor/working class, BIPOC, LGBTQ, criminal legal system-involved individuals. Activities will be carried out collaboratively wherever possible.
  • Participating in Youth Services restorative justice team and broader agency by attending team meetings, staff meetings, and other activities as needed.

Physical Requirements

Job is in an office-based setting, and includes the ability to operate equipment such as computers, phones, and copier. Position will include some travel by automobile.  Must be comfortable with a hybrid workplace: we anticipate that approximately 50% of activities will be in person.

Education

Degree or certification in restorative justice, mediation, or social work, or an equivalent amount of proven and relevant experience. 

Additional Requirements 

  • Experience facilitating restorative justice processes or mediation, virtual facilitation a plus
  • Experience developing and evaluating new programs
  • Experience teaching or training adult and youth learners preferred
  • Experience with community organizing and outreach
  • Excellent administrative, organizational, writing, and communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to engage with community members who have experienced trauma, incarceration, and crime, and come from diverse racial, economic, and other backgrounds
  • Proficiency with e-mail, phone, Zoom, Microsoft Office and Excel, and Google Docs required
  • Experience with social media, web design, Microsoft Access desired but not necessary
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends
  • Travel is required. Must have reliable transportation and motor vehicle insurance coverage.
