Full-Time Packaging Manager

Job Description

We are looking for a passionate and knowledgeable person to join the brewery as Packaging Manager on a full-time basis. Reporting into the Head Brewer, the successful candidate will be passionate about taking every single beer we make from tank to glass with utmost pride.

Our packaging is done in-house with a 5000-cans-per-hour Leibinger canning line made in Germany. We are currently packaging 80 kegs per hour with minimal manual handling and looking into upgrading our cask set-up.

​Our packaging team includes a packaging lead and two packaging operatives. We are looking for someone to lead our exceptional packaging team and ensure all our packaging operations are carefully planned, resourced and run smoothly, whilst meeting all the quality, hygiene and safety requirements.

Key Responsibilities

Responsibilities include (but are not limited to):

  • Managing all packaging departmental responsibilities:
    • Leading the team, comprising a packaging lead and packaging operatives
    • Setting up, guiding, closing down packaging runs and ensuring paperwork is completed accurately and on time
    • Managing resource and responsibility, focusing on health and safety, hygiene, SALSA, quality, workflow and efficiencies
    • Stock management, including ordering packaging materials
  • A focus on operations and quality, with targets based on:
    • Hygiene, ensuring no contamination is introduced through packaging
    • Packaged beer specifications
    • Packaged beer volumes (yield)
    • Efficiency (hectolitres per person)
    • Minimal wastage of consumables
    • No stock-outs of packaging materials
    • Following SALSA guidance and policies
  • Maintaining quality to the highest standard, focusing on hygienic process, carbonation, calculating priming rates, parameters for each beer and key potential issues such as dissolved oxygen levels in pack
  • Working closely with the Brewery Engineer to ensure the machine is maintained and working smoothly
  • Constantly improving processes to maximise efficiency and cost reduction
  • Managing stock of packaging materials – ordering, storage and organisation (FIFO system), defect returns assessment disposal (kegs, cans, etc.), return of non-consumables (pallets, layer dividers etc.)
  • Working closely with relevant teams on approving and tracking progress of labels and other packaging material
  • Developing, following, and training others in Standard Operating Procedures throughout all stages of packaging, including QC sampling and testing as part of our QA programme
  • Working closely with Brewers, Brewery Engineer, Head Brewer and attending meetings (such as a weekly packaging team meetings) to make sure operational and quality improvements are discussed, agreed on, communicated and implemented
  • Attendance at daily team meetings with the production and warehouse team
  • Attendance at weekly forecasting meetings
  • Contributing to and abiding by a HACCP system to maintain standards of Food Safety, Food Quality, and Personal Safety.
  • Maintaining the cleanliness of the packaging areas of the brewery

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Excellent knowledge of the packaging process
  • Excellent knowledge and experience of working with fast-paced packaging lines, process and machinery is essential
  • Previous experience of managing packaging teams and workforce planning desirable
  • A good knowledge of beer
  • The desire and skills to grow and develop as fast as the business
  • Excellent understanding of Food Hygiene and Health and Safety practices
  • HACCP level 2 would be desirable
  • Qualifications or training in brewing and packaging, Food Hygiene, Health and Safety or laboratory procedures all desirable

Training will be given as required. All employees are expected to abide by the HACCP prerequisites and Company Policies.

Location: Old Market, Bristol, UK

Hours: 42.5 hours per week. Monday to Thursday from 8am to 6pm, Friday from 8am to 12:30pm. Hours may vary in order to accommodate production and staffing needs. We are currently investigating and consulting changing this work pattern to a 4-day week with a monthly weekend shift including Friday and Saturday on reduced hours.

Salary: From £32,000 to £34,000 per annum depending on experience.
