QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be a Registered Nurse in New York State with a minimum of an Associate’s degree in Nursing. At least 3 years prior experience desired with a focus in Substance Use Disorders preferred. Must possess current CPR/First Aid certification. Phlebotomy certificate desired. Familiarity with crisis interventions, working with special populations, medication assisted treatment, and trauma-informed care are essential. Knowledge and/or experience in a residential healthcare setting desired. On-call assistance and weekend availability required to meet the emergent needs of the resident population. Reliable transportation required; valid NYS driver’s license preferred.
The Nursing Supervisor is part of an inter-disciplinary team and provides direct patient care in addition to maintaining nursing standards under the general direction of the supervising physician. This position is responsible for supervising all nursing employees (LPNs, RNs) and provides support in the management of client conditions. The Nursing Supervisor provides education and evaluation to nursing personnel and resident/patient care staff in regard to clinical skills, patient care methods, and best collaboration practices. Successful candidates will have a good understanding of principles and practices of community mental health nursing, problems and concerns as they relate to substance use, principles and practices of supervision, and application of current nursing procedures and techniques.
JOB DUTIES
- Assure quality of care by developing and interpreting nursing philosophies and standards of care, enforcing adherence to NYS Office of Professions and state nurse practice act requirements and to other governing agency regulations, measuring health outcomes against standards, and making or recommending adjustments;
- Lead the development, design, evaluation, update/adaptation, and implementation of the nursing education curriculum based on educational needs;
- Establish a compassionate environment by supporting the provision of emotional, psychological, and spiritual supports to residents, friends, and families;
- Promote residents’ independence by participating in the establishment of resident care goals and teaching and counseling residents/friends/family, giving them specific care and treatment instructions to reinforce their understanding of their condition, substance use disorders, medications, and self-care skills;
- Administer nursing care and distribution of medications to residents in the program;
- Complete resident care requirements by scheduling and assigning nursing services, ensuring sufficient coverage of units by RN’s and/or LPN’s, and following up on work results;
- Provide input on annual budget, monitor expenditures, perform research on possible investments in equipment or additional staffing, and identify variances in departmental costs;
- Monitor overall physical condition of residents to promote a high quality of care;
- Develop and educate clinic personnel on infection-control policies and protocols;
- Conduct phlebotomy when ordered by a physician or APP;
- Enforce medication administration, storage procedures, and controlled substance regulations;
- Oversee the maintenance of medical and medication records and reports by auditing resident and department records;
- Assist the Medical Director in coordinating the medical and psychological services offered at the clinic;
- Conduct performance reviews of nurses for conformance to program standards and supervising physician’s orders;
- Manage benefit time approval and performance appraisals of direct reports;
- Provide input around admission decisions;
- Prepare written reports on nursing activities;
- Collaborate with other care professionals to develop resident-directed Recovery Plans, address resident health care needs, and monitor/evaluate/record residents’ progress with respect to treatment and recovery goals;
- Maintain nursing guidelines by writing and updating policies and procedures;
- Participate in the training and guidance of staff in regard to department policies, procedures, and best practices to ensure all guidelines are maintained;
- Ensure that all areas are maintained appropriately for the health and safety of residents, staff, and other visitors;
- Ensure operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, completing preventative maintenance requirements, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, requesting repairs, maintaining equipment inventories, and evaluating new equipment and techniques;
- Maintain nursing supplies inventory by studying usage reports, identifying trends, anticipating needed supplies, and approving requisitions and cost allocations;
- Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings, as needed, to ensure consistent, accurate flow of information, agency policies and safety procedures, and provide relevant perspective and recommendations as appropriate;
- Maintain a cooperative relationship among health care teams by communicating information, responding to requests, and participating in team problem-solving methods;
- Maintain professional and technical knowledge by attending educational workshops, reviewing professional publications, and participating in professional societies;
- Assist with contraband checks, as necessary;
- Maintain resident/patient confidence and protect operations by monitoring confidential information processing;
- Other duties as assigned.
Compensation: Competitive; $79,000-84,000/year commensurate with experience;
