Full-Time Social Media and Editorial Assistant
Job Description
Summary: The Social Media and Editorial Assistant reports to the Deputy Director/Editor in Chief handling communications needs in social media, producing quarterly membership newspaper, and providing editing assistance to the Humanist magazine. Requires expertise in social media, along with strong writing and editing skills.
Principal Duties & Responsibilities:
Use leading social media platforms to promote the American Humanist Association (AHA) and its mission, consistently expanding the AHA’s base of followers while taking advantage of opportunities to engage—always keeping messaging consistent with AHA policies and image:
o On Facebook, create and schedule regular posts, make stories, develop and manage ads, manage engagement (comments, visitor posts, messenger, tagged posts, AHA hashtags), interact with other pages, manage events, update cover image, add profile/photo frames, monitor fundraising efforts (initiated by AHA and followers)
o On Twitter, create and schedule regular posts, develop ads, monitor useful trending hashtags and concepts, manage engagement (comments, direct messages, tagged posts, AHA hashtags), interact with other accounts, update cover image, live-tweet events as needed
o Manage other platforms: currently, we also emphasize Instagram, LinkedIn, YouTube, and Discus, but that mix may shift depending on technology and trends
o Monitor discussions and remove content and users as needed
o Ensure target AHA educational and advocacy programs receive sufficient publicity and seek ways to expand the fundraising potential online
o Utilize volunteers to bolster outreach and find ways to leverage friendly influencers
Assist in production of the Humanist magazine:
o Review incoming submissions and assist with rejection and acceptance communication
o Assist with copy editing of articles, columns, and other items
o Write profiles and short pieces as assigned
o Participate in design and layout process with Editor and Graphic Designer
o Assist with contributor communication and mailing list
Manage production of the Free Mind newsletter:
o Include adapted press releases with advice from communications
o Ensure information is gathered for regular blurbs like news of note, contributors lists, obituaries, coalitions, chapters, cartoons, and the article from the executive director
o Help select best organizationally focused articles from theHumanist.com
o Secure photo permissions
o Work with copy editors and graphic designer to bring the publication to print
Support other activities and events of the AHA as needed, i.e. writing for TheHumanist.com, copy editing other AHA materials, and assisting at fundraising events or other special events
Starting salary will be $32-40K. The AHA offers full health insurance, a generous leave program, and a 403(b) retirement savings plan that includes a partial match.
