About the Policing Project

 

The Policing Project at Civil Rights Corps (“CRC”) works to hold police accountable for abusive conduct while building shared community and power among legal advocates, community organizers, and survivors. We work to shrink police power and reduce the harm police cause in our communities. Currently, the project is gearing up for a police accountability campaign in Houston, Texas.

 

Project Goals

 

  • Empower local communities most afflicted by police abuse by providing them with contact information for lawyers who may advise and represent them.
  • Develop an anti-racist collaborative of movement lawyers by providing legal training, creating local support infrastructure, and connecting advocates with community organizers and survivors of police abuse.
  • Change the discourse around policing by collecting and amplifying stories that reveal the inherent violence of law enforcement as it exists today.
  • Impose pressure on police and local governments to discontinue illegal and brutal policing practices through litigation, public storytelling, and participation in local police accountability organizing campaigns.

 

Job Description

 

The Policing Project Manager will help lead and develop CRC’s Policing Project. Job duties include assisting the Project Director with:

 

Project Management and Development

 

  • Coordinating and developing relationships with clients, local and national advocacy organizations, attorneys, organizers, social service providers, and community partners;
  • Designing workflows and accompanying documentation for the client intake and attorney assignments system(s);
  • Crafting and coordinating a police misconduct litigation training program for attorneys;
  • Refining project data collection system and record-keeping for intakes;
  • Writing website copy, political education, and outreach materials for the project;
  • Recruiting and liaising with participating attorneys as well as other volunteers;
  • Developing a template and resource database for attorney cohort;
  • Developing the storytelling arm of the project in coordination with CRC’s Storytelling department.

 

Intake Management

 

  • Interviewing survivors of police violence in English and in Spanish via our intake hotline;
  • Gathering, organizing, and managing documents and other evidence of police abuse;
  • Closely reviewing records and working with attorneys and investigators to integrate information into case preparation;
  • Writing research memoranda and how-to guides on matters of importance to the project, including but not limited to: police department and local government functioning; public records access procedures; local political landscapes; police oversight boards and complaint processes;
  • Periodically reviewing intake data to identify patterns of misconduct and to assess project impact.

 

Litigation Support

 

  • Providing policing case teams with litigation support, to include: communicating with clients and witnesses, drafting memoranda, proofreading briefs, filing pleadings, managing litigation calendars, submitting records requests, assisting with discovery production and review, organizing large quantities of responsive documents, investigating survivors’ claims, and a variety of other case support duties;
  • Working collaboratively with attorneys, fellows, investigators, and policy and storytelling

 

Qualifications

 

The ideal employee is passionate about social justice, hard working, a fast learner, proactive, able to triage a wide array of administrative and substantive work, and able to work in a collaborative environment. Specific qualifications we are looking for include:

 

  • Demonstrated commitment to the mission, purpose, and values of CRC;
  • Demonstrated ability to work well in teams;
  • Proficiency in MS Word, Excel, Adobe, Google Workspace, and database management;
  • Ability to understand and navigate issues of identity, power and privilege with clients, partners and colleagues;
  • Experience working with disenfranchised communities and/or those directly impacted by the criminal legal system;
  • Proven ability to take initiative, establish priorities, work independently, self-motivate, and proceed with objectives with minimal supervision;
  • Strong analytical, writing, and research skills;
  • Highly organized and diligent work ethic;
  • Care and respect for people who are system-involved;
  • Experience conducting investigations in a legal context preferred.

 

Spanish fluency is strongly preferred.

 

Salary Benefits, and Logistics

 

This is a full-time remote position beginning as soon as possible; preference will be given to candidates based in Houston, Texas but candidates in other locations will also be considered. The project manager will receive excellent benefits, including full health care coverage, generous retirement benefits, public transportation benefits, Federal holidays as paid time off, and unlimited paid vacation and sick leave. The position will be paid a competitive salary commensurate with experience and consistent with CRC’s salary scale.  The beginning salary for this position is $51,000.  This position is eligible for overtime pay and is included within United Civil Rights Workers, the CRC
