NEW HIGHER PAY: $16.39 – $22.53 per hour
The Challenge
We are looking for a temporary Driller Assistant to join our Geotechnical team that leads our geologic, geotechnical, and geoenvironmental engineering aspects of planning, design, construction, and maintenance of NC highways. Our team collects and analyzes subsurface info and provides geotechnical engineering designs and recommendations for roadway slopes, embankments, and subgrades, and foundations of roadways and structures to ensure stability and cost-effective construction.
 
In this role you will:
    • Be part of a two-person team performing and supporting our drilling operations to gather geotechnical data that enables our Geologist and Engineer to make recommendations for the design, construction and maintenance on future and existing roadways and structures.
    • Perform in situ tests using standard to complex drilling procedures, including Standard Penetration Tests, Vane Shear tests and Dynamic Penetration tests.
    • Perform normal drilling procedures including auger drilling, mud drilling, rock coring, wash boring, hand augering, rod sounding, and probing.
    • Identify the best method for penetrating subsurface materials to accomplish the Geologist’s/Engineer’s needs.
    • Identify changes in the subsurface conditions based on reactions of the drill equipment and test apparatus between test elevations.
    • Mobilize complex drilling, testing, and sampling equipment.
    • Operate heavy equipment, including trucks, trailers, and transport equipment to job sites. Drilling equipment consists of truck-mounted drills, ATV mounted drills, skid-mounted rigs, and barge drills.
    • Equip drills with drilling tools and accessories that may include pumps, pressure hoses, water tanks, drilling bits, drilling rods, drilling casing, coring apparatus, bentonite mud, mud tub, standard penetration test apparatus, solid augers, hollow stem augers, Shelby tubes, adapters, and hand tools.
    • Maintain complex drilling and testing equipment.
    • Conduct frequent inspections and repairs to drill machines, testing, and sampling equipment.
    • Maintain tool and equipment readiness.
    • Receive instruction from senior technicians in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of power drill machines, drill accessories, survey instruments, and office procedures.
    • Contact property owners to notify them of the project activities and obtain water well information.
    • Contact utility companies to have them determine location of underground utilities on drilling projects.
 
What You Bring
    • Knowledge of water well/geotechnical drilling or heavy equipment operation/equipment maintenance.
    • Experience operating and maintaining a chain saw and power tools.
    • Experience performing normal drilling procedures, such as auger drilling, mud drilling, wash boring, rock coring, hand augering, rod sounding, and probing.
    • Experience identifying the best methods for penetrating subsurface materials and communicating subsurface changes between tests from drill reactions.
    • Experience communicating work to be performed to property owners, obtaining water well information, and describing location of work to underground utility locating services.
    • Strength to do heavy work of 100+ pounds of force occassionally, 50+ pounds of force frequently, and 10+ pounds of force constantly to move objects.
 
Notes:
    • Frequent overnight travel may be required.
    • A pre-employment drug testing is required.
 
Education & Experience
    • Associate’s degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology, or a similar discipline; or
    • A High school/GED diploma and 2+ years of drilling experience; or
    • An equivalent combination of education and experience.
