The Facility Design & Engineering Intern is an in-person internship and will report to the Capital Planning & Facilities Department performing administrative, technical, research, data collection, and other related assignments. This position may also have additional assignments with the Transportation Department amongst other groups within Cary.

This position will be available in January 2023 through May 2023, with the potential of an extension through the August 2023. Apply today!

TYPICAL TASKS:

  • Conduct field work to inventory and research Town infrastructure (i.e. streets, sidewalks, lighting, greenways, bicycle facilities and other building facilities) in order to update Town GIS mapping and various databases for asset management using data and findings;
  • Assist with infrastructure construction project management tasks as needed;
  • Assist with engineering and planning studies and projects including design, analysis, document and exhibit preparation and preparation of public involvement materials as needed;
  • Assist with implementation and evaluation of infrastructure monitoring and improvement programs;
  • Review, categorize and organize facility and property data;
  • Assist with public meetings and outreach as needed;
  • Perform use and safety studies at Cary facilities;
  • Perform development review of site plans and subdivision plans and other related duties;
  • Work with the real estate division as needed;
  • Perform CAD or GIS related designs;
  • Perform other job-related tasks as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

  • Candidates must have the ability to work an average of 20 hours a week through May 2023 (schedule is flexible).
  • Candidates must have the ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as work effectively in a team.
  • Candidates must have strong research, writing and communication skills and working knowledge of MS Office software, particularly Excel and Word.
  • Candidates should possess a strong interest in learning about various aspects of local government engineering and planning.
  • Must be able to move throughout town facilities freely to perform or observe work.
  • Occasional field work is required in which employee may have to drive to project sites, collect data and observe construction.

MINIMUM AND PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Requires enrollment in or recent graduation from a undergraduate or graduate program with an focus on construction management, engineering, GIS, civil design, landscape architecture, public administration, or related field. Recent graduation is defined as graduation on or after December 2022.

Preference will be given to candidates who have completed at least two years of college including some credits in areas of study previously noted. Candidates with some CAD, GIS, or design software experience are highly desired.

Required drug testing and background check (which may include criminal check, education verification and credit history review) prior to employment.

Requires a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
