What is the organisation about?

We have started a new organisation for the promotion of public awareness of polyamory in the UK. You’d be involved in a ground breaking project to promote polyamory to the general public, through bringing together and supporting the polyamorous communities in the UK. We aim for our work to actively promote the inclusion of diverse minority groups.

UKPA Mission Statement:

“The UK Polyamory Association exists to support the needs of polyamorous people and communities across the UK. We aim to increase public awareness and acceptance of polyamory, and challenge stigma through advocacy, positive representation, and education.”

What are we looking for?

We are a group of community organisers who are passionate about bringing people together and promoting polyamory, and we would like to bring on board another person who shares our vision and passion.

We are seeking an assistant project manager/general administrative support to be excited, involved and invested from the start of this project. Your work will inform the direction and future of the project.You will need to be very organised and to have initiative, flexibility, critical and creative thinking, and the ability to help the lead project manager make decisions.

You will need to be comfortable with being openly polyamorous/consensual-nonmonogamous as the organisation aims to be transparent and accessible specifically for the polyamorous community, besides the general public. We also feel it would be very difficult to contribute to the setup of a polyamorous charity for polyamorous people unless someone is polyamorous themselves, at least at this point in time. Lived experience in polyamory is an essential feature for the job because of the need to understand the community, as this is a community organization for polyamorous people by polyamorous people.

Key parts of the job, for example, involve identifying and understanding needs of the community during community engagement, describing such needs during applications forms/pieces of paperwork for grants/to various external partnerships, occasionally being able to talk with external partners/stakeholders about what being polyamorous means/etc/from living experience as well, etc.

We also specifically encourage applications from disadvantaged groups such as racialized minorities, women, LGBTQ+ folks, disabled people, and others.

What does the job involve?

We support a healthy, sustainable work-life balance, and will be working as a team on the following tasks; we are aware that not all of these will be undertaken every week.

  • To help set up the organisation to register with the Charity Commission;
  • Support the charity in obtaining funding, with activities such as searching for grants, writing of bids, institution of online fundraisers;
  • Provide practical and administrative support to the Project to ensure smooth running of the programme;
  • Maintain internal filing systems to underpin the work of the team, such as google docs: commitment to being organised;
  • Creatively brainstorm with other members of the team and volunteers;
  • Organising brainstorming activities with members of the community;
  • Coordinate meetings for the team, taking minutes, prepare correspondence, and assist the PM with other tasks as needed;
  • Helping creating and/or editing community resources;
  • Be a direct point of contact to address queries from members of the public;
  • Be involved in relevant activities if needed, such as: training, reflective practice, commitment to professionalism and compassion;
  • Other tasks to support the project as needed.

The following tasks will arise as the organisation (and your role/hours within it) grows. We will also provide additional training where appropropriate and needed.

  • Organise outreach activities, such as going to polyamory events, setting up stalls at pride events, etc; advertise them, sending invites, distributing papers at such events, sometimes outside office hours.
  • Initiate and cultivate liaisons with partners, such as LGBTQ+ associations, polyamory groups, etc.
  • Supporting the charity and the team in compiling the annual finance report, impact data, and as-needed paperwork.
  • Help create a social media presence for the association and link to those other platforms on the website – help to maintain the social media presence and seek to develop engagement.

What skills and experiences we are looking for (in order of importance):

Essential skills/experience

  • Experience of community organising and/or event planning and/or activism or similar.
  • Experience of using typical office software (word processors, spreadsheets, databases, etc). We use Google Workspace and therefore familiarity with this would be useful.
  • Lived experience of polyamory/consensual non-monogamy

Desirable skills/experience but not essential

  • Having worked in the charity sector.
  • Experience in grant writing and winning bids.
  • Social media management skills.
  • Basic IT skills would be useful (although not generally required day to day).

What’s the benefits:

Flexible Hours: Working pattern is Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, and Thursday, in the afternoon. Occasional meetings with the Board of Trustees or Community Activities might happen in the evening/weekends. Whilst we currently offer 10 hours per week [flexible], we are aware that you may not be able to work on strictly scheduled times each week, and we are happy to be flexible in how we work together. As opportunities for increased hours arise, we will be happy to negotiate suitable additional hours for your individual circumstances.

Remote working: This flexibility extends to how we work together. Whilst it is preferable that we are able to meet face to face (in Bristol or surrounding areas) to work regularly, it will be possible to do most of the work remotely, and therefore location is not a hindrance.

Mental wellbeing: You will be working on a project unique to its kind, not only nationwide. You will be promoting positive social change and feel good about what you do for the world. You will be part of a team of supportive, enthused individuals who support healthy work-life balance.

Continued training: We encourage continued learning and advancement. We will provide training to support you in your continued development.

Pay/Contract: Currently this role is offered for up to 10 hours a week, at £10/hr, with the expectation that we will be able to offer increased hours and potentially increased pay as the organisation continues to grow. Because we are waiting to get established as a corporate body through the Charity Commission, we do not have a payroll system in place yet, hence we would provide a self-employment contract. This will change once we obtain a registration number as a CIO.
