HMRC Fraud Investigation Service (FIS)
HMRC’s FIS department are responsible for the department’s civil and criminal investigations. FIS ensures that HMRC has an effective approach to tackling the most serious tax evasion and fraud. FIS are home to a wide range of people with a variety of skills and professional backgrounds – including accountants, cybercrime specialists, criminal justice professionals, tax professionals and operational delivery support teams to name but a few.
Digital Support and Innovation (DSI) is the specialist support business area responsible for the provision of enhanced digital and covert specialist technological support to FIS investigations. DSI works across Law Enforcement and government. DSI provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations and works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems to enable investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime.
HMRC’s Cyber & Digital Forensics (C&DF) plays an integral role in Her Majesty’s Government’s fight against serious and organised crime, supporting investigations totalling hundreds of millions of pounds each year. Our forensic practitioners are a key part of the UK Law Enforcement community, working on a variety of cases, from corporate criminality to tobacco smuggling. C&DF is a well-established, national resource with a strong delivery record and a reputation for robust results. Our services are in high demand, as we embrace the challenges posed by the pace of technology development and advances in data exploitation.
About the Role
Being a part of the Digital Forensic Laboratory team provides a rare opportunity to be exposed to current and new technologies, and developing your skills in a rapidly changing technological environment.
Research is at the heart of everything we do and we encourage new ideas, implementation of new technologies and practices.
In the role you will be primarily tasked with the acquisition of computer based evidence in a state of the art digital forensic laboratory.
The work you do is the most crucial step in the forensic process, so attention to detail is paramount.
As your career develops, you can expect to take on specialist projects further supporting the team’s goals to innovate new solutions to evolving problems.
You will immediately embark upon a comprehensive training and competency development programme, this can include overnight stays to undertake the bespoke training required to obtain the fundamental knowledge to complete your duties.
On some occasions you may encounter material that may be of an obscene, offensive or distressing nature. This material should be handled in the appropriate manner ensuring it is secured according to defined policies.
Upon the completion of training and internal competency requirements, job holders shall be eligible to progress to CIDAA/T Base Tier allowance.
You will require National Security Clearance (SC) clearance once appointed to the position.
Key responsibilities include:
• Examination of a wide range of digital devices in a Laboratory environment, following internally developed standard operating procedures which maintain evidential integrity.
• The acquisition of forensic images and the production of this primary evidence.
• Identifying forensically sound solutions to emerging technological challenges
• Writing statements of fact for use in criminal proceedings
• Making, and be accountable for, decisions and activities within the criminal justice system; these may also be subject to scrutiny and inspection from external authorities and third party experts
• Supporting senior colleagues in the team to enable case progression
• Post holders will carry out activities governed by established HMRC procedures pursuant to the ACPO Good Practice Guide for computer-based electronic evidence; and legislation.
Essential
• Experience with computer hardware, operating systems and software
• Have a keen interest in emerging technologies
• Have an awareness of the ACPO Principles of Digital Evidence
