Full-Time Crime Analyst

Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

This person in this position will incorporate research methodologies, statistical analyses, and mapping strategies to perform data reviews and analyses of crime reports. The Crime Analyst will also interpret crime patterns and trends and disseminate information related to suspects, potential crimes, locations of future crimes, and forecasting of future criminal events. The Analyst will establish methods for other employees to obtain relevant crime information, reports, and maps. The Analyst performs other related work as required.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS                                                                                          

  • Incorporate research methodologies, statistical analyses, and mapping strategies to perform detailed data reviews and analyses of crime reports
  • Perform data analysis and reporting of crimes statistics, trends, patterns, and related police intelligence work by extracting and analyzing data regarding criminal subjects in the city
  • Assist the department in meeting objectives by monitoring, analyzing, and evaluating crime patterns and trends, and forecasting future criminal activity using statistical analyses
  • Prepare comprehensive analytical products such as reports, charts, graphs, tables, and maps including summary reports and crime bulletins
  • Maintain data files and tables in computerized systems
  • Provide effective oral presentations and briefings; facilitate intelligence and crime analyst meetings
  • Research, retrieve, and evaluate confidential information related to complex criminal investigations
  • Proactively interact with members of the department to communicate historical crime data, current crime trends/patterns, crime statistics, and forecast potential criminal activity
  • Create automated files for others to use in originating reports; create databases, reports, spreadsheets, and maps for information management functions and distribution to department
  • Interpret information regarding criminal activity in internal and external reports and databases
  • Work with other law enforcement agencies to compile and exchange information on mutual crime subjects
  • Provide department employees with objective analyses to assist in problem-solving and zone assignments
  • Maintain awareness of new developments in the field of crime analysis and incorporate new developments as appropriate into crime prevention programs
  • Communicate courteously and effectively with other employees, officials, outside agencies, and the public
  • Establish and maintain professional contacts with experts, analytical counterparts, educators, and researchers; act as liaison with other agencies and citizens
  • Assist Public Information Officers with crime information to be disseminated to the news media, civic organizations, and the public
  • Assist the Training Division/OPS in training department employees in crime analysis functions
  • Select appropriate methodology and procedures for effective completion of assignments and communication of results
  • Attend state, regional , and national crime analysis training to maintain current knowledge of crime analyst functions

MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

Requires a Bachelor’s degree in criminal justice, public administration, computer science, math or closely related field; two years of experience in law enforcement and/or crime analysis is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of local, state and federal laws pertaining to evidence handling, storage and disposal;
  • Skill in conducting maintenance checks of vehicles and other equipment;
  • Ability to keep and maintain accurate files and records;
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions;
  • Ability to write routine reports and business correspondence;
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from managers, clients, customers and the general public;
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions;
  • Ability to interpret a variety of technical instructions, and deal with a variety of concrete variables;
  • Ability to be continuously on call;
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

CERTIFICATION, LICENSE AND SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

Requires a valid Georgia Driver’s License.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The work is medium work and requires balancing, climbing, crawling, crouching, feeling, fingering, grasping, handling, kneeling, lifting, mental acuity, pulling, pushing, reaching, repetitive motion, speaking, standing, stooping, talking, visual acuity, and walking.
