Full-Time Research Manager

Job Description

The University of Washington (UW) School Mental Health Assessment, Research, and Training (SMART) Center (https://smartcenter.uw.edu/) is hiring an experienced Research Manager  to oversee the Designing Real-world, Effective Approaches for Multilevel Implementation (DREAMI) research program within SMART, led by Dr. Aaron Lyon (SMART Center Co-Director).

DREAMI is a robust federally funded (primarily by the National Institute of Mental Health and the Institute of Education Sciences) program devoted to the development of usable and effective approaches to improving the accessibility, effectiveness, and equity of social, emotional, and behavioral services delivered in K-12 (primarily public) education settings. The Research Manager will supervise staff and work across multiple projects including (but not necessarily limited to):

  1. Beliefs and Attitudes for Successful Implementation Schools (BASIS)
  2. Helping Educational Leaders Mobilize Evidence (HELM)
  3. Virtual Implicit Bias Reduction and Neutralization Training (VIBRANT)

The position also serves as a member of SMART’s leadership team, working collaboratively with other research and technical assistance units to advance the center’s mission and values. The SMART Center is an implementation research and technical assistance organization co-located in the UW Department of Psychiatry and the College of Education. About the position: 

This position has a high degree of responsibility for achieving the research goals of multiple projects simultaneously. The position must understand and be able to intervene in the complexities of mental health and implementation research such as participant recruitment, human subject protection, field staff hiring and training, research data quality assurance, supporting grant writing, translation of research aims into field methods, and staff reorganization for different phases of research projects. The position must also understand the complexities associated with conducting mental health services research in public school settings with participants from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds. In addition, the position must address complexities of participant families, such as family conflict, child abuse, adolescent suicide risk, depression, disruptive behavior, and learning disorders. Additional complexities come from: Working with multiple Principal Investigators / faculty; Managing IRB requirements; Managing database needs and construction and the staff who utilize them; Summary and presentation of data to analysts; General trouble shooting (e.g., study problem identification and problem-solving solutions); Liaising with community and national partners.

This position is critical to advancing the research and community impact missions of the university, the department of psychiatry, and the SMART Center by managing multiple large-scale federal research projects focused on improving mental health services in public school settings.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

This position is critical to a large research center in the School of Medicine (Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, which is the second largest department in the School of Medicine). The position represents the University in the community, particularly in schools and school communities.

(1) Provide overarching leadership and coordination surrounding all aspects of the DREAMI research program: (a) Contribute to ongoing strategic planning for the DREAMI research program; (b) Identify ways to build/enhance DREAMI program cohesion, climate, and effective within-team collaboration; (c) Liaise and collaborate with other SMART Center teams (10%)

(2) Own new project startup activities within the DREAMI program, such as: (a) Initial IRB application preparation and submission; (b) Determine staffing needs; (c) When necessary, initiate and manage hiring processes for new staff, in collaboration with the DREAMI faculty lead and SMART’s Program Operations Specialist; (d) Construct detailed, internally facing project timelines (15%)

(3) Directly coordinate or support specific research projects. This may occur over the entire duration of some projects or, for others, during especially busy times. (25%)

(4) Lead hiring, training, and supervision of Research Assistant and Project/Study Coordinator staff within the DREAMI program, supporting their ongoing professional development. Lead and conduct performance evaluations, in close collaboration with the DREAMI faculty lead. (25%)

(5) Track and project DREAMI budget statuses, with support from PBSCI post-award support staff: (a) Track DREAMI-specific budget expenses, reimbursements, and coordinate as needed with the SMART Program Operations Specialist and PBSCI post-award supports; (b) Anticipate budget spenddown needs and design spenddown plans (5%)

(6) Track work needs within the DREAMI program and coordinate as needed with the SMART Program Operations Specialist surrounding FTE deployment. (5%)

(7) Manage procedural/compliance with research sponsor requirements including: (a) Preparation and submission of project status/final reports (e.g., via eRA Commons); (b) Data archive submissions; (c) Clinical trial registration/updates. (5%)

(8) Manage or delegate ongoing IRB communications with the University of Washington IRB for specific projects (e.g., IRB modifications, status reports, eventual closure). (5%)

(9) Continue own professional development surrounding program coordination, management, supervision, and related activities. (5%)

(10) Though not required, SMART staff and faculty are encouraged to participate in ongoing diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (e.g., workgroups focused on continual policy review, training/professional development needs, etc.)

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
Supervises research study coordinators and research assistants within the DREAMI research program.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master’s Degree in  social work, psychology, public health, education, or a related field
  • At least two years of in-depth research coordination experience (i.e., managing federal research studies)
  • A minimum of one year of research supervisory experience (i.e., managing multiple research staff working across projects)
  • Experience completing institutional review board (IRB) applications and reporting to federal research sponsors
  • Experience working in education, school mental health, and/or children’s community mental health research
  • Strong organization skills, attention to detail, and ability to think critically to anticipate and plan for project needs

Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements, such as a license/certification/registration.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working in K-12 educational settings
  • Experience conducting implementation research or technical assistance projects in public service settings
  • Experience delivering interventions to promote youth/student mental/behavioral health and wellbeing (e.g., psychotherapies, social emotional learning curricula)
  • Experience applying human-centered design (a.k.a., user-centered design; design thinking) methods (e.g., user/usability testing)
  • Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, socioeconomic and other backgrounds
