Temporary Medical Interpreter
Job Description
The Medical Interpreter, French, facilitates verbal communication by conveying, as faithfully as possible, messages transmitted between Health Care Providers (HCP) and limited English-speaking patients/families (LEPs) who speak French, with the focus on the transmittal of medical information for direct patient care. The Medical Interpreter will be involved in a variety of complex patient care situations and will work with patients, families and inter-professional health care teams.

- Abide by Code of Ethics as established by the National Standards Guide for Community Interpreting Services
- Explain the role of the interpreter by properly introducing self
- Protect patient health information and confidentiality
- Refrain from imposing own values and opinions
- Maintain professional conduct at all times
- Refrain from mediating, advocating, giving advice or expressing opinions
- Refer patients/family members who have questions to the appropriate healthcare professional
- Provide interpretation in the following situations: pre-operative explanations, obtaining informed consent, post-operative discussions and instructions, family rounds, discharge planning, and specialized teaching (e.g., Diabetic, Transplant, Pharmacy and Dietetic teaching)
- Provide sight translation for direct patient care discharge summary, medication instructions, and post-operative care
- Provide over-the-phone interpretation related to direct patient care
- Follow the policies and procedures established by Interpreter Services and the Hospital
- Participate in monthly departmental team meetings when possible
- Make on-going efforts to educate Hospital staff in how to work effectively with interpreters
- Raise awareness among SickKids staff of the need for interpretation services as a resource to LEPs
- Complete annual eLearning modules, occupational health requirements, and other hospital mandates
Here’s What You’ll Need
- Successful completion of a language proficiency test i.e. CILISAT, ILSAT
- Certification in medical terminology from a recognized college or education program
- Active membership with OCCI (Ontario Council on Community Interpreting)
- Active membership with Critical Link (International Organization for Professional Interpreters & Translators)
- Experience providing interpretation services in a hospital setting is preferred
- Excellent organizational, communication, interpersonal and collaboration skills
- Proficiency and fluency in English and French
- Capacity to also interpret in Spanish or another language preferred
