Location: Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge, Sasabe, AZ

Located in southern Arizona, near the international border with Mexico, Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge was originally established in 1985 to preserve habitat to recover the endangered masked bobwhite quail. Originally a cattle ranch, the area has numerous invasive grass species that overtake the native grasses. Encompassing 118,000 acres, BANWR provides valuable habitat for desert grassland wildlife including pronghorn and the endangered masked bobwhite quail. Habitat management and restoration practices are utilized to restore native plant species to the landscape to benefit all wildlife species.

Position Description:

This individual placement is meant to facilitate personal growth and professional development and promotes exposure to land management agencies and networking with agency professionals. This could include gaining experience in a variety of conservation fields and/or shadowing different work groups.

Conducting invasive species surveys and management on Buenos Aires NWR will help the staff determine priority areas when it comes to habitat management/restoration efforts for the endangered masked bobwhite quail. It will also direct future efforts by showing which management methods are most effective.

The member will provide support and assistance under the guidance and direction of FWS staff in the accomplishment of:

  • Invasive Plant Management: Manually remove (where applicable) or apply herbicide to treat non-native invasive plants including Lehmann lovegrass, buffelgrass, etc.
  • Use ESRI FieldMaps for ArcGIS on a mobile device to record surveillance, treatment and monitoring data.

Local hazards include rattlesnakes and other reptiles, bees and other stinging or biting insects, sharp cacti and plants as well as rough, uneven terrain. Refuge is located along the international border with Mexico, which means there is the change to observe or experience situations that involve Border Patrol. Members are expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow staff/members or resources.

Vehicle and Equipment Use/Safety: If a vehicle is required for the accomplishment of the duties, one will be provided by the FWS or ACE. Any tools required for the accomplishment of the duties will be provided by the FWS. Use of personal protective equipment (PPE), typically provided by the FWS, will be mandatory for any activity that requires it. Strict adherence to FWS and ACE equipment training, certification and safety protocols is required.
