Established as a community non-profit in 1972, The Center provides targeted programs and services to the full diversity of the San Diego LGBTQ community. The mission of The Center is to enhance and sustain the health and well-being of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, queer, transgender, nonbinary, immigrant, and HIV communities for the betterment of our entire San Diego region. The Center currently has over 75 staff working at five facilities across San Diego County.

POSITION SUMMARY
Armed with personal experience, skills, and information, persons with lived experience are often the most effective at reaching and engaging other LGBTQ young people who are vulnerable and connecting them to Center services, including housing, drop-in services, and mental health services. Under the direction of the Community Housing Manager, The Center’s Peer Outreach Navigator/ Peer Support Specialist will identify and link young people to programs offered by The Center and other services providers as appropriate. This position will also provide support, role modeling, and coaching, facilitate the intake process, and increase the organization’s exposure in areas of the community unaware of The Center’s services.
PRIMARY ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conduct community street outreach in specific targeted areas where LGBTQ youth experiencing homelessness or housing instability may congregate, including (but not limited to) neighborhoods, schools, wellness centers, and libraries
- Coordinate and collaborate with other youth outreach teams
- Engage youth who are disengaged from care, isolated from friends and family, and/or are in some form of crisis in their lives
- Provide linkage and warm hand offs to other program staff
- Document engagements with clients in the region’s Homeless Management Information System
- Support youth as they engage in services offered by The Center
- Track data for reporting, maintain case notes and appropriate records and files
- Participate in a case conference, team meetings, and periodic training opportunities as requested
- Provide intervention and program support to program staff; prepare agendas and activities for the group, support various meetings and activities, and facilitate groups and lea activities.
- Utilize shared life experiences expertise to advance program interventions and participant satisfaction
- Identify and navigate the complex community’s resource and referral processes
- Apply mental health first aid training to participants in crisis
- Provide aftercare, follow up, and stabilization support services to participants
- Prepare and submit required narratives for collaborative reporting funding sources
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Language Skills: Fluency in English required.
- Other Skills: Must demonstrate competency in working with various diverse populations. Must have
excellent interpersonal communication skills. Ability to manage multiple tasks with shifting priorities.
Those with lived experience as a member of a historically under-served community (i.e., low income,
communities of color, LGBT communities, immigrant communities, etc.) are strongly encouraged to
apply. - Computer Skills: Must be comfortable working in PC/Windows-based environments. Must have
proficiency with Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Outlook, and Excel. Experience with using electronic
health records is preferred.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- Education and/or Experience: A minimum of one year of experience working with LGBT youth, HIV+
youth, and/or youth of color is preferred. Experience working with transgender and gender nonconforming youth preferred. Training in trauma-informed care and positive youth development is
preferred. Prior experience working with homeless youth and the foster care and juvenile dependency
systems is preferred.
• Language Skills: Fluency in Spanish preferred.
COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
- Compensation: The pay range for this position is $19.00 to $20.50 hourly and is commensurate with
