Full-Time Associate Director for Brand and Creative

The Associate Director, Brand and Creative (payroll title: Public Information Specialist) directs creative output for UW Medicine Advancement from the early concept stages through to production. This position serves as a leader on the Strategic Communications team, overseeing the UW Medicine Advancement brand and producing high-impact visual and video content that furthers UW Medicine Advancement goals. The Associate Director works with colleagues to achieve a shared vision for a given project, develops the creative direction and ideas to achieve that vision, coordinates internal and external resources to implement the project, and tracks the project’s success.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBLITIES

Creative Oversight and Project Management (45%):
• Lead meetings and processes with internal stakeholders to establish a shared vision for design and video projects.
• Develop and present creative concepts that meet the vision and achieve internal buy-in along the way.
• Work with communications staff, external vendors and stakeholders to plan, track and meet project goals and timelines.
• Serve as the primary project manager for UW Medicine Advancement creative services, setting priorities and tracking budgets, timelines, workflows, results and resources.
• Research audience needs and industry trends, ensuring UW Medicine Advancement’s brand and creative is following and advancing best practices in fundraising communications.

Design Lead Art Direction (45%):
• Use brand guidelines and project specific perimeters to solve the design problems and deliver strong materials in a timely manner.
• Research and develop concept for projects.
• Work closely with project partners (editorial, photography, fellow designers, event leads) to inform smart design.
• Present concepts/work to stakeholders in an articulate and professional manner. Receive feedback, implement change, work with co-creators to turn around product by deadline.
• Create print-ready files, sign-off on proofs and conduct press check.
• When digital, work with digital strategist to ensure end product is aligned with approved concept/design.
• Art direct photography, illustration and video projects to meet organizational goals within brand.

Leadership (10%):
• Manage in-house graphic designer, supporting and nurturing their growth and development and helping them navigate competing priorities.
• Build and maintain relationships with a portfolio of reliable vendors and provide technical direction.
• Ensure effective and positive collaboration across the office.
• Foster and model positive leadership behaviors, collaboration, authenticity and a growth mindset.
• Build relationships with design, photography and video teams across UW and UW Medicine to leverage assets and resources when possible.

Other duties as assigned.

SUPERVISION
This position supervises one graphic designer and manages external design and production vendors.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
• Bachelor’s degree in Graphic Design or related field. Equivalent experience may substitute for degree requirement.
• Any combination of formal training, education and/or practical experience in graphic design, visual communication, information design, marketing, communications, or a similar field.
• Minimum of five years of relevant graphic design experience.
• Experience developing, maintaining and implementing an organization’s visual brand.
• Experience overseeing video projects, particularly in the nonprofit sector. Equivalent combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills have been acquired may substitute for degree.
• Proficiency with Adobe Creative Cloud titles, including Photoshop, InDesign and Illustrator and with the Microsoft Office productivity suite. Familiarity with the fundamentals of digital design. Proficiency with WYSIWYG editors in WordPress or equivalent CMS. Working knowledge of HTML and CSS.
• Proven ability to work collegially and effectively with colleagues to design and implement successful creative that advances organizational goals.
• Demonstrated experience leading teams, managing workflows and tracking and delivering results.
• Experience with print and digital magazine design and layout.
• Demonstrated experience with organizational proficiency and project management, including the ability to prioritize concurrent deadlines and overlapping tasks. Must be able to work in a team environment as well as independently. Must be flexible in a fast-paced setting and able to work under deadline pressure. Must be self-motivated with a positive attitude. Must be able to work professionally with many constituencies.
• Demonstrated creativity, organizational ability, and strong attention to detail. Ability to make decisions in ambiguous situations, exercise good judgment based on information and analysis in a fast paced, dynamic, deadline driven environment in an organized and professional manner.

Equivalent education and/or experience may substitute for minimum requirements.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
• Knowledge of development/advancement/alumni relations principles. Knowledge of healthcare fundraising practices.
