Full-Time Assistant Policy Counsel

YOUR OPPORTUNITY

As the Assistant Policy Counsel, you will be responsible for assisting with federal, state, and  local-level legal and policy research and analysis, advising on legislative and policy strategy, and interfacing with local animal protection groups regarding research needs. This position reports directly to the Senior Policy Counsel.

This is a full-time, remote position. This position requires domestic travel, this is equivalent to approximately 3-6 trips per year. We are only able to consider applicants who reside in the United States and possess United States work authorization.

CORE RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Researching and assessing policy options at the federal, state, and local levels, including conducting feasibility assessments and SWOT analyses.
  • Summarizing and communicating research findings to the Public Policy team, to other THL teams, and to allied groups.
  • Conducting and overseeing case studies of successful and unsuccessful campaigns at the local level.
  • Assisting with analyses of the political environment in target localities, as it relates to probability of success for legislative campaigns.
  • Tracking state, local, and federal legislation relevant to THL’s policy goals.
  • Assisting in planning THL’s legislative agenda.
  • Assisting with developing lobby and education materials, including but not limited to fact sheets, letters, action alerts, and blogs.
  • Assisting with the drafting and submission of official regulatory comments and testimonies.
  • Interfacing with local level groups to assist them in analyzing proposed legislative initiatives.
  • Assisting in developing local legislative strategies.
  • Assisting with THL’s participation in coalition work.
  • Assisting with prioritizing and organizing the Public Policy Team’s research, projects, and files.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  • Juris Doctor degree with a minimum of 2 years experience working on legal and/or policy pertaining to food and/or animal welfare.
  • Experience conducting legislative research pertaining to food policy and/or animal welfare.
  • Ability to analyze local food and animal welfare opportunities in terms of political feasibility, time and resources required for success, and impact on animals raised for food.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with ability to clearly and effectively summarize research findings for audiences without legal backgrounds, both orally and in writing.
  • Solid organizational skills with an ability to conduct multiple research projects.
  • Highly proficient in using contemporary office software applications. Demonstrated ability to learn new software quickly and objectively.

Starting salary $69,700 or salary to commensurate with experience.
