Full-Time Media Associate
Job Description
Position Objectives:
• To advance animal rights by representing PETA to all forms of media
• To oversee correspondence with media and advise staff on media interactions, including but not limited to outreach letters, arranging interviews and statements, Twitter pitches and other media outreach opportunities
Primary Responsibilities and Duties:
• Handle incoming requests and inquiries from the media for interviews, statements, information, etc.
• Secure interviews and media outreach opportunities, ensuring that PETA’s message reaches national audiences with maximum impact and exposure
• Write and edit official media statements and reaction letters, and send them to the appropriate media outlets
• Proactively research current events and designate appropriate spokespeople to complete media interviews
• Guide staff members in handling media requests and working with the media
• Supervise media interviews, including after-hours and weekend media requests
• Monitor Twitter for trending topics and opportunities; brainstorm, develop, and implement pitch ideas
• Establish and maintain relationships with print, TV, radio, and online media contacts on the local and national levels
• Manage databases of media contacts and supplemental information
• Liaise with and advise PETA’s foreign entities about PETA’s campaigns and requests from media outlets
• Perform any other duties assigned by the supervisor
• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience working in a professional environment
• Minimum of two years of professional working experience
• Thorough knowledge of animal rights issues and campaigns and a desire to pursue a career in animal rights
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, editing skills, and relationship-building skills
• Ability to take initiative and follow-through
• Ability to make sound judgments and work both independently and as part of a team
• Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment and stay organized
• Ability to maintain strict confidentiality at all times
• Willingness and ability to be on call during weekends and evening hours
• Professional appearance and adherence to a healthy vegan lifestyle
• Support for PETA’s philosophy and the ability to professionally advocate PETA’s positions on issues in a professional manner
• Commitment to the objectives of the organization
