Black Feminist Future Seeks Director of Communications

Status: Full Time Employment/ 40 hours a week

Location: Remote

Salary: $85,000 – $100,000 annually with a generous benefits package.

Black Feminist Future (BFF) is an initiative informed by the legacy of Black feminist organizing, grounded in the current pulse of movements, and located at the emergent need to amplify the power of Black women and girls in organizing and building power for the 21st century. BFF is a movement organization that focuses on the dynamic possibilities of galvanizing the social and political power of those who have the lived experience of being a Black woman or girl including but not limited to trans, cis, gender non-conforming, non-binary, LGBTQI, and other gender marginalized people. Position Summary

Reporting to the Deputy Director, the Director of Communications will set and guide the communications and culture shift strategies that consistently articulate Black Feminist Future’s mission and strategic priorities. The Director of Communications will ensure that BFF is viewed as the primary source, disseminator, and conduit of information for our members and partners. The Director of Communications will work closely with the director team within the organization as the communications partner on a variety of programs and strategic initiatives. In particular, the Director of Communications will work closely with the Power Building Team to develop our culture shift work that will focus on building narrative and cultural power to disrupt misogynoir and advance Black feminisms.

This position will lead and build the Communications team, currently, a communications manager, and work closely with the team and strategic consultants to concurrently support internal organizational communications and amplify the work of BFF externally. To do this, the Communications Director will effectively leverage message development, earned media, digital strategy, and brand oversight to raise the visibility of BFF’s work, our members, and partners in the media and public narrative. They will also assess key qualitative and quantitative metrics to determine future communications strategies.

The Communications Director will bring strong existing media relationships, as well as a firm understanding of both earned and paid media strategies and activities to drive media engagement with our work. They will lead a team to implement public relations strategies and other tactics to drive earned media and raise BFF’s profile as a leader and driver for Black feminisms. They will oversee rapid response efforts, including message development and dissemination, as well as other media strategies. They will write or oversee the writing of op-eds, talking points, speeches, and other public-facing materials for the Executive Director, as needed. In addition, the Communications Director will work closely with the Directors of Power Building and Development to ensure full integration of digital efforts with other campaign goals and strategies. They will oversee all digital staffing and activities, including email program, texting outreach, acquisition, website, and social media.

Responsibilities

Communications Strategy & Relationship Management

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate the organizational communications and culture shift strategy with a focus on advancing Black feminisms and amplifying the work of our members
  • Lead the generation and dissemination of content that deepens the engagement of audience segments and leads to measurable action
  • Lead our culture shift narrative power work and collaborations and campaigns with a focus on alignment and impact
  • Put communications vehicles in place to create momentum and awareness of the organization and our work, as well as to test the effectiveness of communications activities
  • Create metrics for tracking and measuring the level of engagement within the network over time
  • Manage development, distribution, and maintenance of all print and electronic collateral including, but not limited to, newsletters, brochures, annual report, e-newsletters, and website
  • Build and manage media contacts and partnerships with a focus to amplify and elevate BFF’s communications footprint

People Management

  • Mentor and lead Communications team
  • Manage Communications contractors and consultants
  • Serve as a leader within the organization to shepherd the values, Meridians, and organizational culture of BFF and our movement.

Qualifications

BFF is seeking an accomplished Director of Communications who has at least 7-10 years of communications experience, ideally in in-house organizational leadership roles, and covering areas such as website content, newsletters, and donor communications. The ability to take knowledge and transform it into exciting and useful messages, and disseminate it to the right audiences through the best distribution channels is critical. Experience in movement organizations, BIPOC-serving organizations, women-serving organizations and knowledge of Black feminist thought preferred.

Specific requirements include:

  • Highly collaborative style; experience developing and implementing communications strategies
  • Excellent writing/editing and verbal communication skills
  • A strong track record as an implementer who excels at managing a variety of key initiatives concurrently
  • Relationship builder with strong existing media relationships and the flexibility and finesse to “manage by influence”
  • High energy, maturity, and leadership with the ability to serve as a unifying force and to position communications discussions at both the strategic and tactical levels
  • Sincere commitment to work collaboratively with all constituent groups, including BFF staff, Board members, volunteers, donors, program participants, and other supporters
  • Self-starter, able to work independently
  • Entrepreneurial; enjoys creating and implementing new initiatives
  • Prior organizing or movement building experience a plus

Location: Black Feminist Future is an Atlanta based national organization. This position is full-time remote. Occasional in-person meetings and activities may be required (in accordance with public health guidelines).
