Freelance Essay Specialist (Remote)
Job Description
College Essay Guy is always looking to connect with experienced college essay specialists! Though we aren’t currently hiring, you can still send over your resume (more info below) so we can connect when hiring opens back up.
Each year, Ethan collaborates with a small group of essay coaches to help guide students through the process of reflecting on their lives and creating compelling essays and applications. He’s looking to add a few more essay coaches to the team!

As an essay specialist, you will:
- Meet with students one-on-one to guide them through the process of turning their rich and varied life experiences into college essays that matter
- Help students brainstorm topics, draft outlines (as needed), and polish their essays, in addition to their Common App/UC/UT/Coalition application Activities Lists and Additional Information sections
- Be trained and in the CEG philosophy and approach, with regular meetings to discuss student progress and troubleshoot concerns
- Meet with students virtually throughout the summer or early fall
- Help keep students inspired, motivated, and on track to meet deadlines
As an essay specialist, you are:
- An empathic soul and a great question-asker with a strong ability to help students feel comfortable sharing and engaged (or as reasonably engaged–we know it’s hard with some students) in the writing process
- Experienced with the college admissions and college essay writing/application process
- Able to adapt to different students’ needs, personalities, motivation levels, and writing abilities
- Flexible to meet with students virtually during the evenings and weekends (if needed)
- Able to meet 1-2 times per month with fellow essay coaches to review student progress and address issues and questions about student progress
Bonus points if you’re familiar with College Essay Guy material and have used it with your own students (but not required–we can train you up).
Best of all: you can live and work remotely from the comfort of your own anywhere! (No need to be local to Los Angeles)

Compensation & Start Date
- This is a contract position, paid based on the number of students you work with and the package that the student signed up for. The hourly rate typically ranges from $60-$110/hour
- Work with students takes place generally from June – January.
