About MVP

MVP is a best-in-class advising platform connecting progressive donors to the most effective and promising grassroots organizations in the country working at the intersection of movements, community organizing, and elections. We aim to increase investment in frontline organizations led by the most impacted communities to increase turnout among the progressive base, build long-term political power, and ultimately to transform our country at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2020 cycle, MVP successfully moved over $120 million to over 600 local groups across the country, focused in the most critical states.

We are organizers, and the heart of our work is organizing donors through MVP to support local groups in order to build, sustain, and amplify their impact. We work in service of local groups, and we try to be aware at all times of the power dynamics of being a funder and to be careful about incentivizing actions that could alter an organization’s own priorities; we work hard not to impose on our partners. We are also striving to continuously scrutinize and dismantle the ways we manifest and reproduce white supremacy culture both internally and externally.

POSITION OVERVIEW

Working closely with the VP of Programs, you will be owning the grant making and partner relationships in a portfolio of Tier 2, 3, and 4 states. As owner of a grant making portfolio you will be responsible for identifying groups doing impactful work, defining grant making objectives and key results, supporting groups through our grant making process, and ensuring the timely collection of information for our fundraising efforts and reporting. You will work closely with the rest of our Program Team, including: Capacity Building, State Advisors, and Fund Directors. The Political Advisor will also be tasked with specific political research and tracking projects that will help inform our grantmaking at all levels. This position reports to the VP of Programs.

As a Political Advisor, you will be responsible for:

Grant Advising and Partnership Management

• Work closely with VP of Programs and Fund Directors to advise grant making in state advisors in Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 states.
• Build authentic relationships with partners in which MVP is seen as a trusted ally, and collaborator.
• Identify new partners in states.
• Develop a strategy for grant making in each of the assigned states that seeds emerging initiatives, scales existing impactful work, and supports groups to be more sophisticated in their voter contact and base building operations.
• Represent MVP’s work and strategies in donor and philanthropic spaces.

Political Research and Tracking

• Work closely with the VP of Programs to track state and national political landscapes, including polling, electoral races, constituency trends, and analysis.
• Advise on a cohesive strategy for Tier 2, Tier 3, and Tier 4 states.
• Work with State Advisors to support information gathering that supports their strategies.

Cross-team Accountability

• Working with the Communications team and Deputy Director of Program Advising, to provide partner information for the production of written and visually compelling plans, state and fund one-pagers, updates, reports, and other materials as needed.
• Collect stories from partners that highlight the impact of their work.
• Build collaborative relationships with colleagues across the organization.

Other duties: We’re a growing organization, and responsibilities will evolve with the role and as opportunities emerge.

Qualifications

Required:

• Experience in the field – the more multifaceted, the better. You’ve worked in, led, and supported local grassroots organizations and deeply understand their work.
• Skill and comfort facilitating meetings, managing timelines, tracking budgets, and project management with multiple stakeholders.
• Cultural humility – ability to build relationships across lines of difference.
• Demonstrated ability to engage at a high level with issues of racial equity and inclusion.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to leverage technology and database systems such as Google Suite, AirTable, and Slack.
• Passion for grassroots progressive political change and shifting power to marginalized communities.

Preferred

• Demonstrated capability to lead cross-functionally – a creative and collaborative thinker and overall positive presence.

• Experience in both grassroots and national organizations.

• Facilitation experience.
• Ability to work in VAN and other campaign tools.

Additional Information

Location: Fully remote, with the expectation of occasional travel post-pandemic (i.e. 2-5 times annually). We strive to create a family-friendly work environment and can make accommodations for team members with limited ability to travel.

Compensation and hours: This is a full-time, salaried position with a base salary range of $85,000 – $105,000, commensurate with skills and experience, with generous benefits including employer-paid medical and optional dental and vision insurance, basic life insurance, 401(k), regular work-from-home and wellness stipends, and four weeks of paid vacation.
