Purpose Summary:
The Education Manager develops, leads, and implements a comprehensive and results-oriented plan for the PAWS Education Programs. This position leads the PAWS Education Team with the goal of inspiring and empowering compassionate behavior, stewardship, and action towards animals, both domestic animals and wild animals. The position provides programmatic oversight and supports the development of experiential education programs primarily focused on youth in area elementary schools but also for people of all ages and backgrounds in our community. The role is hands-on and works with youth directly while overseeing and leading a staff also engaged in this work.
Based in Lynnwood, WA, PAWS is a champion for animals – rehabilitating injured and orphaned wildlife, sheltering and adopting homeless cats and dogs, and educating people to make a better world for animals and people.
Essential Responsibilities:
In accordance with organizational policies, duties include, but are not limited to:
- Provide overall vision, planning, implementation, and leadership for the Education Department, including evaluating and updating current curriculum and programming for efficiency and efficacy within the overall mission of PAWS.
- Support the curriculum development and teaching of youth education programs, utilizing best practices in experiential education and culturally responsive instruction.
- Develop annual work plans with the education staff team, and support staff in delivering high quality, relevant work.
- Engage in proactive efforts of community outreach to grow the program to reach new and diverse audiences.
- Manage program records and assist with scheduling programs in a professional and timely manner.
- Ensure accurate record-keeping and apprise the Sr. Director of WL, CAS and Education Services of ongoing programmatic needs and updates; submit regular reports detailing high-level activities, successes and areas needing improvement, and an annual education department summary report in January each year.
- Work with the Education Team to strategize and implement programmatic policies and procedures to ensure alignment with organizational needs.
- Develop and manage program evaluation tools, including quantitative and qualitative metrics.
- Help secure diverse funding sources to support PAWS Education Programs, including researching and writing content for grant proposals, fostering corporate sponsorships, reviewing, implementing, and managing program fees, and completing follow up reports with assistance from PAWS Development staff.
- Help develop and operate within expense budget projections and ensure the Education Team achieves education revenue goals. Work collaboratively with the CEO and CFO to create the annual education department budget for consideration.
- Stay abreast of Washington State and national educational standards as well as trends and best practices in youth education. Ensure the relevancy of programs and determine annual goals and quantifiable outcomes.
- Provide educational content for PAWS’ website and publications, in coordination with PAWS Communications staff.
- Collaborate with PAWS leadership team on opportunities for new partnerships in alignment with the mission and seek news audiences to expand the reach of the organization.
Other Responsibilities Include:
- Responsible for the recruitment, hiring, orientation and training, management, scheduling, evaluation, advancement, and recognition of Education Team members and potential education volunteers in accordance with PAWS policies and procedures.
- Represent PAWS professionally in the community, including at various outreach and education events.
- Assist staff with finding ways to improve and learn in the field of youth education through professional resources and regional trainings within budget.
- Develop materials to support educational and community outreach activities. Work with PAWS Communications team to develop and implement marketing plan for education programs and events.
- Other related duties as assigned.
Controls Over Work
The Education Manager works under the general guidance of the Sr. Director of WL, CAS and Education Services and is expected to work independently to pursue the established duties without direct supervision. This position will frequently work directly and collaboratively with other departmental staff at PAWS.
Physical Requirements:
Work is performed both in and out (remotely) of the office or classroom and in the community. Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time, including working at a computer. Must be able to transport education program supplies. Candidates must be able to lift a minimum of twenty-five (25) pounds with the assistance of other staff or volunteers.
Requirements:
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required. Masters’ Degree or equivalent experience is valued. Preferred fields of study: Education, Biology, Environmental Education, or a related field.
- A minimum of three years successful experience planning and facilitating formal or informal education programs for diverse community members.
- A minimum of two years’ experience in staff supervision and program management.
- A passion for PAWS’ mission, teaching, and learning, and demonstrated successful prior experience in delivering educational programs. Experience in animal welfare, health, or conservation/environmental education field is preferred.
- Strong supervisory skills and ability to motivate and inspire high level performance from staff. Successful experience working with diverse community members.
- Possess excellent interpersonal, organizational, written, and verbal communication skills, and able to effectively manage people and be able to provide a positive working environment built on team concepts.
- Strong organizational skills, with the flexibility to multi-task and juggle competing priorities. Experience with scheduling, budgeting, and long-range educational planning desired. Must be able to work occasional evenings and weekend events as needed. Conveying enthusiasm for the mission and attention to detail are also important.
- A valid Washington State driver’s license with no major or repeated minor traffic offenses; ability to drive to variety of locations. Must be able to provide reliable transportation and required insurance coverage. Must be able to transport outreach equipment and materials.
