THE JOB/THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
This is an executive position that reports directly to the City Manager and oversees Public Works & Transportation staff and several budgets, including the Department’s $95 million operational budget, approximately $63 million 2-year CIP budget, and approximately $187 million 5-year CIP budget. The Director of Public Works & Transportation will have the opportunity to work in one of the most ideal building locations due to plenty of funding, resources, and opportunities. They will serve as an organized and experienced project manager to serve as a liaison between the Department, City Council, and community. The next Director of Public Works & Transportation will have exemplary communication skills and be able to explain complex ideas or projects to key stakeholders in simplistic terms. This position requires significant strategic planning and technical knowledge in transportation systems, funding, design, and project management.
The ideal candidate will use their technical expertise and interpersonal skills to meet the goals and objectives of the Department and City. They will use sound judgment, decisiveness, and creativity as they oversee projects and programs of the Department. Having analytical skills to categorize data and make informed decisions is essential, as is having strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills. The successful candidate will show enthusiasm for innovative solutions and act as a visionary leader to staff. They will stay on top of current trends, theories, and practices to ensure the Department is providing the most cutting-edge services to the community.
Minimum Qualifications:
Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities would be:
- A Bachelor’s degree in Public Administration, Engineering, or a related field.
- 8 years of increasingly responsible experience in managing a broad range of public works programs, transportation engineering/planning.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid California driver’s license.
Desired:
- A Master’s degree.
Salary and Benefits: Annual Salary $141,648 – $220,688 (DOQ/DOE) and an attractive benefits package.
