The Director of Team and Culture will facilitate an excellent workplace culture focusing on, retaining, and supporting a talented staff and creating and managing a framework for organizational professional development and learning opportunities. This role oversees multiple HR functions and ensures a positive experience throughout the employee life cycle by developing the best programs, processes, and practices for our team. Post-COVID-19 restrictions, up to approximately 10% travel may be required.

The Director of Team and Culture will be a member of the core team and lead human capital initiatives for the organization. The core team includes business systems, operations, and HR, and its purpose is to support the program teams to drive impact for students. The program teams consist of Strategic Advising and Policy & Evaluation. Our Strategic Advising practice advises leaders and organizations on their most pressing strategic and operational issues. Their work ranges from supporting entrepreneurs through business plan development, to partnering with established organizations on growth and performance improvement, to assessing new opportunities for impact as the field evolves. The Policy & Evaluation practice conducts research to develop ideas, publish reports, and make recommendations on education policy and the broader conversation about America’s schools.
Responsibilities
The Director of Team and Culture will work at both the strategic and tactical levels, creating a vision and realizing that vision in hands-on ways. The Director will have a key role in the implementation of the Bellwether strategic priorities, specifically focusing on developing external partnerships that help build out a diverse talent pipeline, creating and implementing a professional development framework that includes business line-specific content while also ensuring training is consistent where it makes sense and is provided in a cohesive way across all teams. This person will additionally have a key role in helping Bellwether get to a more sustainable staffing model. The Director of Team and Culture will report to the Chief Operating Officer.
In this position, you should expect to:
- Supervise Team and Culture team members, currently the Talent Manager.
- In collaboration with the COO, set a clear and compelling vision and strategic priorities for attracting, onboarding, developing, training, and retaining diverse talent.
- Conceptualize, lead, implement, and monitor human capital programs, systems, and policies—including, but not limited to, compensation strategies, training and development, performance management, employee engagement, and retention aligned with impact, business, and team goals.
- Collaborate with senior leadership to understand Bellwether’s long-term mission and goals related to a vision for workplace culture and the organization’s human capital needs and policies.
- Reimagine the current onboarding process and implement an innovative process that considers the differentiated roles and levels of that are hired by the organization.
- Develop and implement an organizational strategy to attract, retain, and promote a diverse and inclusive workforce and evolve current talent strategy to improve and expand the diversity of candidate pools for existing and future roles.
- In year two, in collaboration with business line leaders, design and implement an organization-wide professional learning and development framework.
- Coordinate activities related to diversity, equity, and inclusion with leaders.
- Collaborate with the COO regarding HR operations financial strategies by estimating and forecasting core team needs based on the organizational strategic plan.
- Lead organization’s internal initiatives, related to organization design, change management, employee engagement, team effectiveness, and staff coaching as needed.
- As necessary, assist the Director of Operations with employee relations concerns and provide guidance and/or recommendations for resolution of issues.

- An understanding of and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
- Five to seven years of experience and success working in HR, Talent Acquisition, and Organizational Development, preferably with a nonprofit and/or professional services organization.
- Commitment to providing excellent internal customer service.
- Experience developing and implementing a learning and development strategy that cultivates staff growth.
- Experience developing and operationalizing talent management strategies, including performance management, career development, and core competency models.
- Established credibility as a reliable and innovative problem-solver, strategic thinker, thought partner, and functional expert on human capital strategies and issues.
- A well-rounded interpersonal skill set with the capacity to collaborate with many diverse stakeholders within the organization, work effectively and collaboratively in a team environment, and facilitate joint problem-solving with the team.
- Flexibility as a leader who can operate at a highly strategic level but can also perform tactical HR-related responsibilities.
- A highly self-motivated work style and willingness to proactively take on roles within project teams and the organization.
- Comfort with and interest in joining a small, entrepreneurial organization with a flexible working environment.
- Ability to thoughtfully give and receive feedback, and experience doing so.
Compensation
Salary range starts at $125,000 annually.
