Full-Time Director of Retail
Job Description
Job Summary: The Director of Retail leads a team responsible for dispensary, retail and sales operations across B&M customer facing channels. The director supports the development and leads the execution of B&M’s retail strategy and drives the growth of its retail model. They will have accountability for the progress of strategic projects and the continued improvement of retail operational performance at B&M. The Director of Retail Operations must have the ability to master both strategic and operational issues along with the ability to dynamically handle multiple competing priorities. They must have outstanding teamwork and collaboration skills as well as excellent communication, analytical, project management and relationship skills. This position directly reports to the Vice President of Sales.
Responsibilities:
Leadership Development
- Manage retail leadership with clear communication and both immediate and long-term actionable plans
- Set SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Time-bound) goals for direct reports and maintain quarterly progress meetings
- Perform annual staff performance evaluations
- Promote knowledge sharing throughout the retail organization and build a culture of continuous learning
- Coach staff on retail best practices and use of data for informed decision-making
- Work closely with dispensary manager on budtender training content and delivery formats
- Responsible for communicating expectations on training, development, empowerment, positive management practices, employee relations, preventive labor practices, and adherence to all company policies and practices
Strategy & Planning
- Set and own the end-to-end customer experience strategy for retail to increase trial, repeat purchase, and brand loyalty
- Work closely with Marketing and Sales on customer acquisition through advertising and direct to consumer channels
- Partner with Marketing to uphold retail brand standards, ensuring the store looks and feels like a premium shopping experience seven days a week
- Ensure flawless execution of events, promotions and all customer-facing activities at retail
Metrics & Reporting
- Analyze sales data to inform product mix, buying, and behavioral trends
- Generate and present a thorough monthly sales report for executive management
- Track forecasted to actual retail revenue
- Conduct regular meetings, as needed with Senior Management staff to review critical KPI’s, obtain feedback and determine the appropriate level of assistance
- Craft sales strategies and continuous improvement recommendations using available data sources
Operations Oversight
- Continuously evaluate Retail related standard operating procedures for functionality and edit as needed
- Support store setup of the current and all future locations
- Work closely with the Director of Compliance to ensure Retail location remains in operational compliance with 935 CMR 500 and support B&M’s culture of compliance
- Establish regular check ins with dispensary manager to review operational flow, efficiency and alignment with customer experience strategy
Qualifications
- 5-10 years retail leadership experience
- Professional demeanor in person, over the phone and in writing
- Strong written and verbal communication skills; active listening a must
- Extreme attention to detail; ensuring staff and customers always have the most accurate information and presenting it with care and confidence
- Solid project management and follow up skills with the ability to strategically plan from concept through execution
- Desire to continuously improve the customer experience and meet sales goals
- Data analysis skills and familiarity with basic business intelligence tools
- Ability to interpret data to support sound decision making
- Passionate leader who enjoys mentoring direct reports and providing hands on direction
- Good eye for improvement opportunities and professional growth
- Strong retail background and proven track record of success overseeing at least two or more retail stores
- Prior cannabis experience or regulated industry experience a plus
- Committed to and passionate about supporting diversity, equity and inclusion
- Knowledge of Massachusetts cannabis regulations or willingness to build up a working knowledge of regulatory requirements quickly
- Passionate about the growing social acceptance of cannabis, desire to increase Adult Use access and reduce the stigma associated with its use
- Cannabis product knowledge a plus
