Full-Time National Donor Organizing Manager
Job Description
About Movement Voter Project:
MVP is a best-in-class advising platform connecting progressive donors to the most effective and promising grassroots organizations in the country working at the intersection of movements, community organizing, and elections. We aim to increase investment in frontline organizations led by the most impacted communities to increase turnout among the progressive base, build long-term political power, and ultimately to transform our country at the local, state, and national levels. In the 2020 cycle, MVP successfully moved over $120 million to over 600 local groups across the country, focused in the most critical states.
Our Approach:
We are organizers, and the heart of our work is organizing donors through MVP to support local groups in order to build, sustain, and amplify their impact. We work in service of local groups, and we try to be aware at all times of the power dynamics of being a funder and to be careful about incentivizing actions that could alter an organization’s own priorities; we work hard not to impose on our partners. We are also striving to continuously scrutinize and dismantle the ways we manifest and reproduce white supremacy culture both internally and externally.
We focus on building from our assets, and taking a positive approach to growth and change that helps groups and donors to feel comfortable being vulnerable about their areas of improvement. We believe in a non-competitive, non-divisive, whole ecosystem approach; we are always seeking opportunities to support and encourage collaboration among groups and donors.
POSITION OVERVIEW
As National Donor Organizing Manager, you will help to organize a movement of donors fundraising for MVP, with both the passion of an insurgent presidential campaign and the steady long view of progressive power-building.
In our ”Big Organizing” approach, we combine technology and people power through scaled-up, relationship-first organizing, in which multi-layered, peer-to-peer volunteer leadership is given the trust, training, tech, toolkits, and support to extend our impact far beyond our staff capacity.
You will report to and work closely with our Director of Donor Organizing, as well as three part-time donor organizing staff. We expect to add interns and staff to the newly-formed Donor Organizing department within the next 1-2 years, some of whom you would manage.
As a new department, we are building our program from the ground up. Our focus is to:
- Raise as much money as possible for our grassroots groups, by enlisting our donors to A) give to their fullest potential, and B) enlist their networks to do the same.
- Build a scalable system that enables volunteers to enroll donors, deepen their own learning & leadership, and build teams of volunteers to do what staff couldn’t do alone.
You will be sharing responsibility with the Director of Donor Organizing for:
- Volunteer intake & support: Developing and managing systems by which volunteers can plug in, get to work, and get direct support from existing volunteers.
- Volunteer recruitment: Working with the department to design and implement ongoing strategies for inspiring our 40k+ donors to become volunteers.
- Event support: Developing and managing systems support staff & volunteers in executing successful fundraising events (mostly virtual during the pandemic).
- Volunteer team support: Help support our 3 existing volunteer teams, while identifying, recruiting, and supporting volunteer donor organizers to form new teams (local, non-geographic, constituency-based, professional association-based, etc).
- Volunteer communications: Developing and managing regular communications (email, Slack, mass meetings, etc) with our volunteer network to boost engagement.
- Data & systems: Working with the department to design, collect, organize, and evaluate data & success metrics, and share with staff & volunteers as appropriate.
- National super-volunteer teams: Identifying, recruiting, and supporting super-volunteers (both new and seasoned volunteers) to support the above functions.
- Intern & staff management: Supporting, coaching, and supervising future Donor Organizing interns, fellows, & staff who will be helping fulfill the above functions.
- Other areas of focus: We’re a growing organization, and responsibilities will evolve with the role and as opportunities emerge.
METRICS, EVALUATION, & SUPPORT
You will set goals, milestones, and success metrics collaboratively with the Director of Donor Organizing, with whom you will meet regularly to evaluate progress, troubleshoot obstacles, move past stopping points, and clarify next steps.
Our focus will be setting and scoring goals that are meaningful, attainable, and will empower you to learn, stretch, grow professionally, AND thrive in your life as a whole.
QUALIFICATIONS
We realize great candidates may not “check every box.” That’s OK! If you can see yourself loving, learning, and thriving in this position, please apply — especially if you notice “imposter syndrome” and the urge to talk yourself out of it. Note: We do NOT require a formal degree.
Qualities
- Alignment with MVP’s mission and theory of change: You are passionate about shifting power to marginalized communities and working at the intersections of social movements, grassroots communities, and elections.
- Organizer at heart: You love empowering others, you view volunteers as colleagues, and you believe in the power of a volunteer-centric, ”Big Organizing” approach.
- “Marathon, not a sprint”: You temper your sense of urgency & passion for social change with self-care & resilience practices that keep you in it for the long haul.
- Growth mindset: You embrace feedback, seek out the coaching and learning lessons from both failure and success, and view yourself as a lifelong learner.
- Emotional & social intelligence: You are able to notice and shift from reactive modes of operating when under stress, and you strive to see and bring out the best in others.
- Cognitive flexibility: You embrace the messiness of social change work, and are willing to see and do things differently than you have seen and done them.
- Cultural humility: You are aware of your biases and blind spots, and not only tolerate but embrace relationships across lines of race, gender, age, culture, and difference.
