Job Description
Hispanics Enjoying Camping, Hunting, and the Outdoors (HECHO) was created to help fulfill our duty to conserve and protect our public lands for future generations. We provide a platform for Hispanics/Latinos to contribute knowledge and perspectives about conservation issues, enhance leadership capacity as impactful advocates of conservation policies, and celebrate Hispanic/Latino cultural heritage and connections to nature. From southwestern deserts to northern forestland, Hispanics/Latinos throughout America have a strong connection to our nation’s diverse landscapes. Together, through HECHO, we urge our elected and appointed leaders to safeguard our precious public lands, so that our children can enjoy fishing, hiking, hunting, camping, and other outdoor activities for generations to come. While our focus is on the protection of public lands in the American Southwest, our work has a national scope and impact. To achieve our mission, we are in need of a talented Communications Coordinator who speaks fluent English and Spanish to work in our Denver, Colorado office. There may be additional flexibility in location for well qualified candidates. There will be occasional travel in this role of approximately 10 nights a year.
Reporting to HECHO’s Executive Director, you will be responsible for deepening and expanding press coverage for HECHO and its work in English and Spanish-language/Latin media outlets, including pitching stories to national, regional, and local papers, magazines, TV and radio stations, and online news outlets. You will track the news cycle and write press statements, op-eds, and letters, etc. to ensure HECHO is weighing in on a range of conservation and outdoor topics, and further develop our unique storytelling narrative through blogs, videos, radio, social media, etc. You will inspire and motivate HECHO’s members and followers on email and social media channels to support and become part of our cause, and curate the HECHO website. You will help develop and implement a strategy to raise awareness about HECHO’s work to attract more financial support for our programs. You will also advance the dual goals of strengthening Hispanic/Latino civic engagement in conservation policy decision making and increasing action supporting conservation policy solutions.
In this role you will:
Develop and implement a comprehensive communications outreach plan for both English-language and Spanish-language content, including an editorial and social media calendar, to authentically engage HECHO’s followers, event participants, and volunteers.
Regularly write content in English and Spanish including blog posts, fact sheets, issue briefs, letters, op-eds, and newsletters.
Write and distribute press releases and background materials in English and Spanish on efforts of interest to national, regional, and web media.
Increase HECHO’s online followers, likes, shares, and maintain and grow HECHO’s email lists by developing and implementing robust digital communications.
Assist the Executive Director with the development and implementation of a digital fundraising strategy, as well as assist in the writing of grant proposals.
Develop talking points for program staff and prepare staff for media interviews.
Help with media training of staff, advisory board, and members.
Coordinate with partners and work on media strategy in coalition with trusted partners.
Identify opportunities for enterprise, in-depth media coverage of the HECHO core issues and pursue them.
Work with program staff and partners to assess media needs and develop appropriate media messages.
Develop and maintain media lists and contacts in English and Spanish media.
Build diverse relationships with journalists and media influencers who may write about a range of HECHO issues, and serve as a good resource for reporters on background info and connection to story sources.
Pitch English-language and Spanish-language media and conduct media outreach in English and Spanish
Monitor media coverage and produce media reports, adjusts goals and strategy accordingly.
Qualifications:
Fluent and conversational English and Spanish language skills.
Outstanding written and oral communication skills.
High level of creativity to complement social media experience and skills, especially on Twitter and Facebook.
Experience monitoring media and managing media monitoring platforms, as well as digital analytics and email metrics.
Knowledge and ability to use multimedia communications tools, including producing graphics.
Familiarity with conservation issues, public land management agencies, and legislative and administrative processes.
Capable of representing and bolstering marginalized voices in advocacy.
Experience:
Proven experience in reporting, advocacy communications, and/or public relations.
Experienced storyteller and wordsmith.
Demonstrated knowledge of Hispanic heritage, in particular cultural and historical connections to the land, air, and water, and ability to share knowledge in a culturally responsive way
Proven success in writing, pitching, and securing media placements in a variety of media platforms.
Experience developing outreach plans and implementing outreach communication activities, including building email lists.
Experience using a range of digital platforms, including Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, MailChimp and Squarespace.
Experience with creating content for digital fundraising is a plus.
Salary Range and Benefits:
This position pays in the range of $43,000 a year.
