Position Summary:
A School Programs Education Presenter (SPEP) is directly responsible for delivering engaging, accurate and high-energy informal science education programs to Pre K – high school students and performs a variety of productions both at the aquarium itself as well as offsite as assigned.
The SPEP position reports directly to the School Programs Managers (Outreach & Field Trips) and collaborates with the managers, leads, and fellow presenters to improve current programs and develop new ones. The SPEP works both within a pair of LLPA Presenters and individually to deliver Educational content to various groups throughout the state of Utah.
This position starts at $14 an hour.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging, high-energy, creative, dynamic and accurate educational presentations in elementary & secondary schools and in LLPA `s field trip presentations that follow the Utah State Core standards
- Understand, support and share with others LLPA’s mission and vision
- Respond to student behaviors effectively/appropriately using effective classroom management techniques
- Safely handle and assist in the care of a variety of animals (tarantulas, amphibians, reptiles, insects) with a comfortable demeanor
- Prepare, manage and utilize presentation supplies and materials appropriately
- Represent LLPA at special events as assigned
- Deliver educational presentations, to guests on the aquarium floor
- Assisting with the creation, improvement, and execution of LLPA summer camps
- Assist with LLPA Boy and Girl Scout Programs as assigned
- Develop new and improve existing programs for the upcoming school year
- Additional duties as assigned by the School Program Education Managers
Education:
Bachelor`s degree in Biology, Zoology, Marine Science, Environmental Science, Education, or a related field is preferred. Experience in STEM programming; development and implementation is preferred.
Critical Skills/Competencies:
- Dynamic public speaking skills and out-going personality.
- Ability to quickly learn complex and/or factual information, then communicate it to a wide variety of age groups in an engaging and creative manner.
- Must communicate and interact effectively and positively with students, teachers, guests, colleagues and supervisors.
- Comfortable with and familiar with animal handling that includes tarantulas, amphibians, reptiles, birds and insects.
- Model outstanding work ethic, manage own schedule and be dependable and punctual
- Knowledge of science processes, marine biology, zoology and/or ecology with willingness to increase knowledge.
- Ability to operate company vehicles and follow vehicle protocol. Must keep a favorable driving record and be willing to permit a periodic review of your driving record, if necessary. A valid UTAH driver’s license is required.
- Bilingual English/Spanish (written and speaking) skills preferred.
Physical Demands of the Job:
This job requires periods of standing and walking as well as extended periods of sitting with data entry. Must be able to lift 50 pounds. Must have the energy to maintain a high-energy, positive presentation style for duration of presentation (ranges from 20-55 minutes).
Special Working Conditions:
Job will primarily be in a classroom environment with additional office time when assigned. Periodic weekend or evening work is expected and some holidays. It will also require handling a variety of animals in a safe manner, while interacting with diverse populations. Forty (40) hour work week with some weekends, with occasional extended visits – schedule includes travel and overnight stay in Utah counties. Must wear issued uniforms and adhere to dress code standards.
