TRANSPORTATION, CENTRAL – NORTHEAST TERMINAL

Work Year: Traditional 245 work days

FTE: 1.0

Salary Range: $18.51 – $19.87 per hour (overtime $27.77 – 29.71 per hour). .45 per differential for p.m. shift + boot and tool stipend of $300 a year

Essential Functions and Objectives:

 

Supports operations through practical application of knowledge, use of proven techniques, and adherence to procedures. Primary focus on execution of assigned tasks in a specific area of responsibility, with a technical emphasis; such as; equipment, machinery, or scientific/chemical.

 

Performs fueling service, preventive maintenance and minor repairs of Denver Public School (DPS) vehicles.

 

Performs hands-on tasks applying proven industry standards and techniques, while adherence to policies, procedures, or guidelines in the area of responsibility. Installs, tests, analyzes, troubleshoots, repairs, maintains, related equipment in order to support short-term operations and minimize downtime. 

– Performs data entry and verification, keeps accurate files/records, creates detailed reports, using various existing systems for accurate, timely, and compliant records.

– Receives, understands, and disseminates information in subject matter to appropriate stakeholders. Diagnoses problems and aids in resolving technical issues and escalates appropriately to ensure a positive experience. 

– Contributes to identifying process inefficiencies and proposes solutions, identifies opportunities through external research on trends in resources, programs, and services and internal research with stakeholders, and supports improvement efforts in order to support long-term operations and minimize downtime. 

– Performs daily fueling and servicing of the district fleet. Performs under hood services, preventive maintenance and minor repairs for district vehicles.

– Assists Maintenance Technicians with required annual Colorado Department of Education (CDE) inspections.

– Assists with preventive maintenance PMA and PMD repairs on district vehicles.

– Assists Maintenance Technician IIs with repairs and service calls.

– Monitors need for urgent repair while performing maintenance work on vehicles and notifies Shop Supervisor.

– Monitors and maintains fluid area inventory and notifies Parts Clerk for need for replenishment. 

– Completes required forms and paperwork, ensuring completeness, accuracy and proper placement of forms in the vehicle.

– Records maintenance activities utilizing computerized systems. Completes annual review of required vehicle forms and documentation ensuring that forms are up-to-date, complete and properly placed in the vehicle.

– Transports vehicle repair parts; tools and equipment; and district vehicles to and from vendors and terminal maintenance sites.

– Performs operator pre-trip vehicle inspections by checking condition and availability of safety and emergency equipment in accordance with CDE regulations.

– Maintains common and fueling work areas by cleaning tables; scrubbing floors; and throwing away or recycling materials. Creates safe work environment by monitoring shop areas, and examining tools and equipment.

– Participates in and supports a team work environment by interacting with other technicians and supervisors, and assisting in the development of new practices and technology. Communicates and coordinates fueling and maintenance schedule and concerns with the shop supervisor.

– Maintains safety and effective operation of personal and shop tools in accordance with guidelines.

– Executes contingency plans during inclement weather operations.

– Attends meetings to give information or discuss fleet fueling and maintenance.

– Communicates with vehicle operators, peers, supervisors and users of District transportation.

– Participates in a random drug and alcohol testing program.

– Perform other duties as requested.

 

Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:

 

– One (1) to three (3) years mechanic experience.

– A current and valid State of Colorado Driver’s License (CDL) is required with BP2 endorsements. 

– Must meet insurability requirements of the Self Insurance Pool for driving a district vehicle.

– Experience in a transportation organization, preferably school bus operations and fleet maintenance, preferred. 

-Experience operating service trucks, preferred.

– The ability to take responsibility for one’s own performance.

– Effective communication skills.

– Effectively handle multiple demands and competing deadlines.

– Strong attention to detail.

– High degree of integrity in handling confidential information.

– Ability to work in a multi-ethnic and multicultural environment with district and school leaders, faculty, staff and students.

– Work collaboratively with others on a team.

– Aptitude for variety and changing expectations and a fast-paced environment.

– Knowledge of maintenance skills (e.g., welding, machine work, electrical and mechanical systems, gasoline and diesel engines, overhaul and rebuild, air and hydraulic brakes, tire repair).

– Bilingual in Spanish, preferred.

Education Requirements:

High School Diploma or GED certificate. 

– Technical community college graduate in automotive/truck mechanics (1 yr. program), two (2) years first line journeyman level maintenance experience and a full set of tools. and/or a combination of education and experience.
