Full-Time Technical Lead (CMG)

Job Description

The Position

We are looking for a Technical Lead to join Kessel Run’s Command and Mission Group (CMG) Portfolio.  The CMG Portfolio is one of three portfolios assigned to the Wing C2 Product Line at Kessel Run, and builds a number of software products to give 100k+ Air Force pilots, mission planners, and base operators the modern tools they need to generate airpower at speed at hundreds of Squadrons and Air Bases around the world.

The CMG Technical Lead works as part of a well balanced Portfolio Leadership team (Portfolio Lead, Acquisition Lead) to provide technical perspectives and advocacy around the development, communication, and execution of the portfolio’s product suite.

The Technical Lead is responsible for maintaining technical awareness of product teams and for supporting the engineers on those teams.  You are charged with guiding product teams on successful implementation and technical strategy. You will facilitate information sharing between leadership and product teams and work with Wing C2 Product Line leadership to solve high-level problems.

The goal is to provide hands-on support to engineers as they execute the Portfolio strategy while also balancing code health. We look to the Lead Engineers to provide guidance to product teams, to direct technical advice, and empower whenever possible. They advocate for team engineering staff concerns with portfolio and WingC2 leadership. .

So that they can be a trusted resource for the discipline, a Technical Lead should have practical Agile and Lean software development experience as well as a wealth of pragmatic experience with Test Driven Development (TDD), eXtreme Programming (XP) and 12-factor principles.

Ideally, this individual has experience in facilitation and communication, and opts for simplicity. They should value and be able to articulate the importance of focusing on outcomes over outputs, from strategy to implementation.

  • You will promote communication between WingC2 Leadership, CMG Portfolio Leadership and Product Teams
  • You will facilitate coordination between Engineering and Product at the team level to collectively problem solve
  • Adapts leadership styles to a variety of situations; models high standards of honesty, integrity, trust, openness, and respect for the individual by applying these values to daily behaviors.
  • You will pair with engineers to identify solutions to technical challenges
  • You will collaborate with the Portfolio Leadership team on how best to achieve WingC2 OKRs and portfolio goals
  • You will collaborate with WingC2 leadership to better understand our strengths and weaknesses as an organization
  • You will tackle cross-cutting engineering concerns; fostering an environment for engineers across the organization to collaborate on solutions
  • You will find opportunities for automation wherever possible and push teams to invest
  • Inspires, motivates and guides others toward goal accomplishment; coaches, mentors, and challenges subordinates;
  • You will advocate for development and implementation of modern, improved technical approaches; fostering a continuous improvement mindset with our engineering staff

Who you are

  • Prefered, but not required.  Candidate will have bachelor’s or advanced degree in engineering, systems engineering, electrical engineering, computer engineering, computer science, mathematics, or physics
  • You have an overall strong foundation in technical, practices, and processes
  • You have done 2-5 tech talks/workshops/events in the engineering community
  • You have a good foundation on Kessel Run engineering practices: TDD, Pair Programming, Tech Stack, etc
  • You have strong technical and/or architectural experiences
  • You have strong technical skills with Spring, SpringBoot, React, and API design
  • You have good domain context on existing team
  • You have good written and oral communication skills
  • You are patient and persistent in getting work done
  • You actively participates in the engineering community (online, in-person, cross-team, workshops, etc)
  • You have a strong desire to grow and mentors others
  • You can operate in ambiguity, but understand that others don’t
  • You are able to reflect on and empathize with others perspectives
  • You have demonstrated leadership abilities in current or previous jobs
  • You are a continuous learner
  • You are a U.S. citizen and are eligible to obtain a U.S. Security Clearance (see eligibility requirements here)

This is a Federal civilian service position within the United States Air Force. We are hiring at the equivalent of a GS-14 up to GS-15 level for this position. This means you can expect a base salary of $93,907 to $143,598 multiplied by your locality rate, based on your experience. You can find your locality definition here and see the pay tables for the GS scale here. Our headquarters is located in Boston, MA; for a Boston-based employee, this would translate to a range from $121,243 to $172,500
