Full-Time Science Writer

Job Description

Summary

The American Institute of Physics is seeking an experienced and collaborative Science Writer to join our Media Services team. The Science Writer will cover a variety of topics, producing content that promotes the latest research to the scientific community while enhancing public awareness and media coverage of AIP, AIP Publishing journals, and the AIP Member Societies.

This position will require collaboration with colleagues throughout the Institute to produce innovative, valued, and impactful content that addresses our audiences’ needs. The Science Writer will communicate through a variety of means including press releases, technical research summaries, and newsletters.

Core responsibilities include, but aren’t limited to, leading multiple projects in a team environment, writing, editing, coordinating, producing, and disseminating a wide range of content geared toward the physical sciences community as well as a nonscientific audience.

 

Proposal Packet Must Include: Cover letter, resume, a completed application, and 3 science writing samples. (Incomplete proposal packets will not be considered for employment)

Qualifications

  • Advanced degree in the physical sciences (physics preferred), PhD preferred
  • 2+ years of experience in science writing, editing, newsroom journalism, and/or media relations is required. (Science Communications training can be substituted for experience)
  • Ability to write about physics and other branches of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics for a scientific audience as well as a general audience.
  • Excellent writing and editing skills, communications skills, and news sense.
