Full-Time Database Projects Coordinator

Job Description

Reporting to the Associate Director of Database Content, The Database Projects Coordinator will assist in creating and extending genealogical databases on AmericanAncestors.org. This position will be the forward, customer facing representative for the Database Team. The database team is responsible for three major areas of operation: 1) creating new databases, 2) making sure online database search and American AncesTREES are functioning as they should, and 3) making improvements and adjustments to our existing genealogical data.

The Database Projects Coordinator will be responsible for expertly and patiently answering patron emails related to searching American Ancestors/NEHGS databases and addressing reported data errors. They will become familiar with our digitization and image processing cycle and assist in digitizing historic documents.

Members of American Ancestors can search one billion genealogical records (birth, marriage, death, census, and other types of data-rich records) across 480 databases on the AmericanAncestors.org. Database search is the primary customer experience for American Ancestors members, and the main revenue driver for the business. Members can also upload personal genealogical data into American AncesTREES, a family tree application that integrates with our record-based databases.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Publish new databases presenting historical materials for genealogical search on AmericanAncestors.org using tools such as Excel, SQL Server Management Studio and other internal tools
  • Respond to customer correspondence regarding database updates and corrections in a timely and professional manner.
  • Write blog posts and other copy that promotes and publicizes the work of the Database Team
  • Create and deliver presentations on using AmericanAncestors.org for genealogical research to the American Ancestors audience through a variety of channels including in-person workshops, online webinars and Facebook Live
  • Communicate effectively to with colleagues, volunteers, and outside vendors

 

Required skills:

  • Ability to stay focused on complex projects, while retaining a high degree of attention to detail
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Experience with SQL Server and SQL Server Management Studio
  • Experience with Microsoft Excel
  • Strong analytical capabilities
  • Not intimidated by technology or the prospect of learning new and evolving technology
  • Expertise in troubleshooting and solving data-related inconsistencies

 

Preferred skills:

  • Genealogy and/or historical data
  • Digital image processing concepts and tools
  • Content management system experience (WordPress and/or Drupal)
  • Photoshop

 

Education Level:

Bachelor’s degree in library and Information Science, History or related area or equivalent work experience
