Job Description
Program Coordinator (Bilingual: Spanish/English)
Theatre of the Oppressed NYC
Organization Description:
Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC)’s mission is to partner with communities confronting oppression to inspire transformative action through interactive theatre. We are dedicated to sparking concrete social and institutional change through a powerful style of theatre that is interactive, playful, and unlike anything most audiences have ever experienced. Through long-term partnerships with community and advocacy groups such as the The Center for Court Innovation, Breaking Ground, and Housing Works, we develop and perform plays based on the challenges their members face confronting economic inequality, racism, and other systems of oppression.

The Program Coordinator, managed by the Interim Executive Director, will work with all members of the staff and TONYC community to ensure reliable care and connection between the various aspects of our work. We’re looking for someone who strategizes how information serves people, and how to sustainably use a range of tools to communicate.

Join a team that values creative problem-solving, and a human-centric work environment.

Responsibilities include:
- Regular updates between the office staff and jokers (facilitators) regarding needs for rehearsals and performances – including schedules, stipend and supply planning, reporting on rehearsals, and preparation for public events
- Updates to internal information about staff, actors and programs
- Communications with venues and vendors
- Maintain our internal reference guide to coordinating TONYC programs
- Support with grant reporting on our programs; become familiar with TONYC’s current funding sources and program parameters
- Attendance at TONYC’s shows and events to support the artistic activism efforts and build new relationships
- Given the nature of our team and our work, there are some activities that everyone participates in! These can include sending thank-you notes to donors and preparing materials for programs
Ideal candidate has:
- Bilingual (Spanish/English) capabilities, with a minimum of conversational fluency, reading and writing with the ability to translate strongly preferred
- 1+ years of experience working with not-for-profit organizations in a similar capacity
- Program or communications support, including email & phone communication, with the aim to be informative, accountable, & responsive with colleagues, partners and strangers, ensure all bases are covered, ask clarifying questions, and interpret and record the answers.
- Managing a robust events/production/meetings calendar, including managing scheduling of other people (colleagues, artists, etc)
- Able to maintain a to-do list and track/update information in shared calendars, Google Docs, and project tools
- Knowledge of and interest in both the arts sector and the social justice / community organizing sectors
- Ability to work both independently and in collaboration with a diverse group of stakeholders
- Excellent attention to detail
- A sense of personal responsibility in the work, and a desire to be communicative about issues promptly
- Experience working remotely
- Experience with project management app like Asana and contact management database
- Interest and/or previous training in anti-bias, anti-racist, and anti-oppression approaches
- Relevant experience and intent to develop in this field are our highest priorities, although formal training will be considered
Hours:
Schedule is approximately 24 hours/week to start, with potential to expand to full-time. The typical weekly schedule will be determined in collaboration with the candidate. Schedule also includes attendance at some performances on weekday evenings. The role involves significant independent work.
Salary:
Salary is $31,200 for 24 hours/week. Benefits include generous vacation and sick time, commuter benefits, retirement plan, Flexible Savings Accounts, discount ticket program membership, and employer-sponsored health, vision and dental plans (inclusive of family members). We also offer staff the opportunity to train in Theatre of the Oppressed and access other professional development opportunities.
