Full-Time Design Director
Job Description
Focus Lab is a strategic brand agency that’s looking for the next addition to our team. We’re a U.S.-based, remote-friendly company with thoughtful, creative professionals, passionate about partnering with good companies. Leveraging our craft and care for others, we exist to unlock the potential in the people around us, both internally and externally. We approach challenges with process-driven intentionality to inform the solutions we create. Craft is our calling card, camaraderie is our brand.
Role location: Remote, USA
We are looking for a U.S.-based, Design Director to join our design team. What does that mean at Focus Lab?
About the role:
As Design Director, you will lead Focus Lab’s talented design team. You’ll view design from a bird’s eye view, but also the smaller details as necessary. You should be obsessed with creative design solutions, the power of process, as well as leading a team. You will serve as a critical bridge between the design team and other departments, most specifically strategy and project management. You’ll set the tone for the design team to work effectively — including design team collaboration, running design team meetings, and overall design operations. You’ll work to identify process improvement opportunities and implement relevant processes within the design department. Finally, and most importantly, you will lead the design team from a people perspective — all 1:1s, mentorship, and growth trajectory support. It’s important to know that this role will not have direct client work, but may occasionally jump in to help the team with their deliverables.
Consider these questions:
Do you love leading and mentoring a team? Is design and branding a passion for you? Can you think beyond a logo and visualize a larger system? Do you value listening? Are you able to reframe challenges in communication as opportunities to connect? Are you comfortable with critique and opposing opinions?
We’re not looking to see if you have a degree in design or people management or many years of experience. Many of our teammates are self-taught. We’re looking to see that you are an empathic leader and design thinker whose love of the craft goes beyond self-expression.
The right designer for this role has:
- Background or skills that align with this position
- A love for leading others
- Initiative, seeing what needs to be done, and making a plan for it
- A love of process, knowing it’s there to help, not get in the way
- Extremely strong communication skills
- Ability to mentor and learn from your teammates
- A unique approach to this job opening — let us know why you’re special!
- An appreciation for small details so getcha some bonus points by including “Applebees” somewhere in your application
- Alignment with our core values
- Soft skills in the way of your humility, hunger, and people smarts
You can expect to:
- Manage and mentor design team members
- Review design deliverables for design quality and accuracy
- Roll up your sleeves on your team’s projects, as needed
- Play a key part in the design hiring process
- Suggest and implement new design process and documentation
- Lead internal design L10’s (We run on E.O.S.)
- Serve as a thought leadership voice in client meetings, as needed
- Serve as a critical communication bridge between our team and clients
- Work during east coast time frames
We will cover the full benefits package further into the interview process, but the key benefits provided by Focus Lab are:
- Unlimited paid time off. You’ll be encouraged to take a minimum of 20 days outside of holidays and sick time.
- Health, dental, and vision insurance plans (medical and dental covered at 50% for you and your family dependents)
- Life, disability, accident, critical illness, and cancer insurance plans
- Retirement plan beginning at your one year anniversary
- Paid parental, adoption/caregiver leave
- Opportunity to draw from a monthly wellness stipend
- Annual professional development stipend
- Two week paid holiday rest at the end of the year
Be who you are with us.
We’re devoted to building an inclusive, supportive culture. That means we don’t discriminate on the basis of race, religion, color, national origin, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status. We especially welcome people of color, women, and LGBTQIA+ to apply.
At Focus Lab, you’ll find an empathetic crew who checks their egos at the door. We aim to assume the best of each other, strive for excellence in all we do, lean into tough situations, and feel empowered to own our work. Sound like you? Super. We expect you’ll be successful here.
