Essential Functions and Objectives:
Provide visionary leadership to management and influence future growth opportunities to achieve long term performance goals & objectives (5 to 10 years). Responsible for executing the overall business plan and acting as a champion for strategic change across departments and community.
The Associate Chief of Academics is a key member of the Academics Division leadership team that is tasked with leading the change that is necessary to ensure that every day, every student receives a highly personalized, standards-based learning experience that prepares him or her for success in life.. The Associate Chief will supervise multiple departments within the Academics Division as determined by the Deputy Superintendent of Academics and Associate Chief.
This role will be responsible for ensuring that all resources and supports provided by these departments are tightly integrated and delivered with the highest quality to educators, school leaders, and school leadership teams. The Associate Chief will build strong collaborative relationships with all Academics departments to help ensure that the Academics Division is an invaluable resource to schools. The Associate Chief is also responsible for building effective collaborative relationships with the Schools Division, which directly manages schools. The Associate Chief will establish strategic goals for the supervised departments, align staffing and financial resources, and drive performance to ensure goals are achieved.
– Create and support district vision, culture and strategic roadmap, including developing policies, acting as a thought leader, and model continuous improvement.
– Develop, manage and monitor budgets that support strategic goals, including: forecasting, linking financial decisions, setting annual costs, and providing recommendations to ensure fiscal integrity.
– Establish and cultivate effective working relationships with key district staff, governmental agencies, school districts, community groups and other resources in support of district initiatives and to maximize visibility.
– Ensure compliance with state and federal laws, Board of Education policies and regulations, maintain and direct activities related to the District’s safety and security efforts.
– Develop strategies and frameworks to support continuous learning. Ultimately responsible for creating organizational capacities, building a diverse culture and promoting a high performing district.
– Implement the annual Academics priorities and accompanying strategies in alignment with the district’s academic goals.
– Ensure that supervised departments are working in a cohesive manner to successfully implement the Common Core and Colorado State Standards in all DPS elementary, middle, and high schools.
– Execute financial and human resources management practices (with support from the Budget Office and Human Resources) to ensure resources are optimally used in support of student success.
– Develop systems to communicate and collaborate effectively with other members of the Academics Division, and other DPS departments, particularly the Schools Division. Engage the Regional Instructional Superintendents within the Schools Division to enthusiastically support the implementation of academic programming. Effectively share knowledge and expertise.
– Remain knowledgeable on and shape research and best practices regarding leadership and management, implementation of standards, adult learning, personalized learning, and student assessments.
– Strategically manage multiple grants and relationships with grant funders, as needed.
– Performs other related duties, including special projects, as requested by the Deputy Superintendent of Academics or her designee.
Knowledge, Experience & Other Qualifications:
– Ten (10) or more years of executive district leadership experience.
– Experience developing and implementing a departmental/unit strategic plan.
– Demonstrated experience cultivating and leading large high performing teams, including building a strong performance-based culture and
implementing and managing supporting systems and structures.
– Experience in increasing student achievement and closing opportunity gaps in racial, ethnic, and economic groups.
– Experience in leading, planning, managing and large and complex programs to successful outcomes.
– Experience leading complex change initiatives.
– Experience in relationship management and networking.
– Experience working with diverse populations, community organizations, and other advocacy groups.
– Experience managing large and complex budgets, ensuring alignment of financial resources with the mission and vision of the Academics Division.
– Principal or Administrators’ License preferred.
– Thorough industry knowledge.
– Identifies key issues and relationships relevant to achieving long range goals or vision.
– Ability to effectively lead an organization.
– Strategic planning and organizational development knowledge and skills.
– Strong interpersonal and leadership skills, including the ability to lead a high-performing team.

Profound knowledge and understanding of issues and concerns related to public education and the administration of a large, diverse urban school district. Understanding of outcome-based performance evaluation of programs and services. Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of student assessment and data collection and their use in optimizing the learning experience for students. Ability to be a team player and collaborate with others inside and outside of the Academics Division on challenging and time sensitive projects. Ability to meet deadlines and work in a highly organized manner. Ability to work with ambiguity in a complex and dynamic environment. Ability to think strategically and execute with excellence. Strong verbal and written communication skills. Deep knowledge of federal, state and local laws, regulations and practices related to instruction. Proficiency in Google Suite.
Education Requirements:
– Bachelor’s Degree is required.
– Master’s Degree is preferred.
