Background
CUNY Start is an intensive pre-matriculation program that helps CUNY associate degree-seeking students with significant remedial needs increase their academic proficiency in English and mathematics prior to enrollment in college credit classes. Reading/Writing Start (“RW Start”), based on the CUNY Start Reading/Writing curriculum and advisement model, is an accelerated program that helps students develop their reading and writing skills, prepare for college-level English classes, and to meet CUNY proficiency milestones.
The CUNY Office of Academic Affairs, the University’s community colleges, New York City College of Technology and the College of Staten Island work collaboratively to provide students with an innovative approach to developmental education. CUNY Start is recognized for its carefully designed curriculum and pedagogy, ongoing professional development, and mentor-based training model. CUNYStart programsarecurrentlylocatedoneight CUNY campuses: Borough of Manhattan Community College, Bronx Community College, College of Staten Island, Hostos Community College, Kingsborough Community College, LaGuardia Community College,New York City College of Technology, and Queensborough Community College.
Job Description
The CUNY Start Writing Assistant is a part-time College Assistant who will work as a member of the Reading/Writing team, supporting the work of the Core teacher in a CUNY Start classroom. The Writing Assistant reports to the CUNY Start Director at their appointed campus.
In Fall 2021, CUNY Start may be delivered solely online or as a hybrid of remote and in-person instruction. Remote instruction is offered as a combination of synchronous and asynchronous formats, to support students’ success as remote learners. Online work may entail instruction on such platforms as Blackboard, Zoom, MS Teams and other remote instructional tools which support the goals and practices of the program.
Responsibilities
Key duties include, but will not be limited to the following:
- Read the CUNY Start Reading/Writing Curriculum closely, and become familiar with CUNY Start learning procedures, assignments, and goals;
- Attend portions of the CUNY Start Reading/Writing class either online or in-person, and support the CUNY Start Core Teacher as appropriate;
- Respond in writing to student papers and essays;
- Tutor CUNY Start students individually and in small groups;
- Participate in CUNY Start team meetings about students’ progress;
- Participate in training activities led by the CUNY Start Professional Development Coordinators for Reading and Writing;
- Perform duties assigned by the Core teacher, including taking attendance, keeping track of student assignments, and setting up the
Requirements
The preferred candidate will possess the educational and professional qualifications as indicated below:
- Experience responding to academic writing and working with non-traditional college students
- Ability to teach reading and writing in person and online
- Master’s Degree preferred
Employment
- $21.34 per hour for approximately 20 hours a week;
- Health benefits may be possible after 3 months of successful employment;
- Anticipated appointment period: fall 2021 semester (End of August 2021– January 2022) or for approximately 12-15 weeks.
